Those who live within Fenway-Kenmore and Longwood know about the Circle, a hidden gem on the fringe of the Cottage Farm Historic District in Boston. With a diverse neighborhood surrounding the Audubon Circle and a lot of history as well, it is one place on the Boston map that deserves more attention than what it currently receives. Audubon Circle is also where multiple events in the Fenway neighborhood take place, so if you plan on attending one in the future, you might as well learn more about Audubon Circle now!

Whether you are visiting Boston or have been here for a while, Audubon Circle is one place worth discovering and exploring. Let’s learn more.

The People and Places of Audubon Circle

Known by locals as “the Circle,” this little pocket is between Kenmore and Fenway Park, Brookline, Boston University, and the Massachusetts Turnpike. To the south is the Boston Fens. Being that it is considered a sub-district of Fenway-Kenmore, the population of the area reflects the rest of the neighborhood. Within Fenway-Kenmore, you will find young professionals, student renters, immigrant families, and long-term Bostonians all living together. The population density is incredibly high, and the roads are lined with apartment complexes instead of single-family homes.

As of 2017, the racial makeup of the population throughout Fenway-Kenmore was around 67 percent White, 13 percent Hispanic, 9 percent Black, 15 percent Asian, and 3.5 percent two or more races. Many residents are between the ages of 18-24. This is because of the number of colleges found throughout and around the neighborhood.

The History of Audubon Circle

Like many green spaces and parks throughout Boston and beyond, Audubon Circle was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1887. The Boston Landmarks Commission defined the architectural feature as “a major crossroads distinguished by a central circle, 250 feet in diameter.” Many of the buildings around the Audubon Circle were constructed between 1888 and 1915 as an extension of the Back Bay district. Back then, Beacon Street was replete with homes—single-family homes, apartment complexes, and three-family houses.

The Audubon Circle District has several buildings remaining from these periods, including Ruggles Church, formerly called the Second Church of Boston, which was designed by Ralph Adams Cram. The Ruggles Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. Around 918-924 Beacon Street, there are Queen Anne/Romanesque houses that show the earliest sections of the Audubon Circle district. Further down, near 875 Beacon Street is Classical Revival buildings.

In 2005, the City of Boston funded a public art piece called the Birds of Audubon Circle to be completed. It was nominated as one of the finest pieces of public art in America in 2006.

As of 2017, the Audubon Circle has been receiving upgrades. A total of $7 million was allotted to the reconstructed of the Circle, including a new design suggested by the Audubon Circle Neighborhood Association. The Circle has been re-imagined as a public space covered in poetry-inscribed planters and greenery. It is also meant to fulfill a part of the Go Boston 2030 plan that desires to create safer and more accessible pathways for residents. Therefore, if you visit Audubon Circle sometime shortly, you will see new wheelchair ramps, better signage, more greenery, benches, pavement markings, and other improvements to the area.

Audubon Circle Today

No visit to Boston is complete without seeing the Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood—and that means the Audubon Circle is nearby. The Circle itself is surrounded by plenty of things to keep you and yours entertained, especially now that it is being improved upon. Audubon Circle is the perfect place to people watch, but it is also a gateway to the Emerald Necklace and many other elements of Boston and Brookline.

Green spaces within reach of the Circle include the Hall’s Pond Sanctuary, Knyvet Square, Riverway I of the Emerald Necklace, Fenway Park, and the Back Bay Fens. Between any of these spaces are shopping districts, restaurants, and other landmarks. For example, if you are headed towards Fenway Park from the Circle, you might as well stop by Kenmore Square. If you are going towards the Fens, stop by the Landmark Center mall. Taking a stroll along the Emerald Necklace? Why not check out the Medical Center Area?

Since all this exploration around the Audubon Circle is bound to make you hungry, check out one of the many restaurants along Beacon Street. There are several spots right around Saint Mary’s Station, including Sol Azteca, Taberna de Haro, Giggling Rice, and Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ. If you looking for fine dining, head southeast towards Boylston Street, where you find several cafes and bars.

If you are thinking of adding a stop to the Audubon Circle into your trip itinerary, you will be pleased to know that transportation to and from the neighborhood is easy. The Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood has numerous subway, train, and trolley stops, including Kenmore Station (B, C, and D Branches), Fenway (D Branch), St. Mary’s Street (C branch), and Symphony, Northeastern, and Museum of Fine Arts (all on the E Branch). The Framingham/Worcester Line stops at Lansdowne Station near Fenway Park, which is within walkable distance from Audubon Circle.
