Even if you have no interest in authors like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Brook Farm is a fascinating attraction to visit.
Located in West Roxbury, Brook Farm is a popular recreational space for those who live around it. However, it is also a site where visitors to Boston go to see the rich biodiversity of flora and fauna.
In the past, Brook Farm was visited by several famous individuals. Most notable was Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, who operated the bookshop where the initial planning meetings were held and money was raised; Margaret Fuller, who was a writer and editor, frequently visited; Theodore Parker; Bronson Alcott; Ralph Waldo Emerson; and Nathaniel Hawthorne and his future wife, Sophia Peabody.
The founders, George and Sophia Ripley, were interesting people, as well. They announced in 1840 that they wanted to experiment on what it meant to live with inequality and vulgarity, in a pastoral setting. They were able to get 10 investors and 32 Brook Farmers. Interestingly, for someplace that was meant to promote equality among the “Farmers,” membership was only granted to those who could purchase a $500 share of the Ripleys’ company.
Many books have been inspired by the Brook Farm experiment and the lives of George and Sophia Ripley.
The communal experiment is one that continues to stand out in history, because, despite its short run, it was the practice in a utopian society. There were many communities like Brook Farm during the time, but none of them succeed. Unfortunately, Brook Farm was short-lived, running between 1841 to 1847. The idea was to combine thinking and working, a guarantee of mental freedom, and to cultivate liberal personas without the pressure of conformist institutions.
The novel idea attracted more than authors and thinkers but also teachers, craftsmen, and farmers. Eventually, Brook Farm had about 80 members, and the men and women lived and worked together. Everyone was provided housing, clothing, and food, as well as a $1 daily profit to all those who lived there.
Brook Farm also functioned as a school that aimed to instill personal responsibility on the students, and there were no mandated study hours. Though there were challenges—like the communal living woes that drove away Nathaniel Hawthorne—the community did well for a time. After three years, it took on the idea of a “Phalanx,” based on theories from Charles Fourier, a French Socialist.
The experiment took a downturn when sacrifices were made to ward off the further financial burden, taking away meat and other staples from the dinner table. There was also an outbreak of smallpox that killed many of the farmers.
Eventually, the Brook Farm utopia turned into a dystopia, and it was halted.
After that Brook Farm became a training camp during the Civil War, and then it was used for boarding and, even later, an orphanage. Once the orphanage closed, a church opened. The non-denominational cemetery, know called the Gardens of Gethsemene, are still there and open for visitation. Unfortunately, many of the original buildings had burned down in fires, so there is not much left.
Even though there has been a lot of developments surrounding Brook Farm and West Roxbury, the area, which is now known as the Brook Farm Historic Site, is still a place of woodlands and trails. You can wander for hours around the pastures and fields and trails or even visit some of what remains of past buildings.
Brook Farm was one of the first locations within Massachusetts to be put on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1977, the Boston Landmarks Commission also called Brook Farm a “Landmark,” in recognition of all that happened. Because of the historical significance, schools from Boston often visit Brook Farm. For example, Harvard University often conducts Archaeological Field School Programs at the site.
On the grounds, you can still visit a few buildings or spend your time exploring the woods as the participants of the experiment once did. Be sure to take plenty of pictures of the various plants and animals you find!
Perhaps you’re a busy Brook Farm parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home.
