There are many residential districts of Dorchester, a recognized neighborhood of Boston, including Ashmont. The area is historical and has been home to many famous Americans throughout the years. With a blend of culture and architecture, tradition and innovation, Ashmont is one of the many places within Dorchester worth visiting for a day or two. Here is everything you need to know about Ashmont, so you can make the most out of your time here.
Ashmont, as well as the area known as Ashmont Hill/Peabody Square, is largely known for its vast amount of Victorian-style households. Many former estates are lining Fuller, Burt, Wrentham, and Dracut Streets. Along with Dorchester Avenue, the area takes on a more urbanized feel.
Caribbean populations have settled in areas like Codman Square, Ashmont, and Franklin Field. Recently, with the reasonable housing prices of Ashmont and Ashmont Hill/Peabody Square, there has been an influx of young professionals, LGBTQ couples, and even working artists into the area. Because of that, Ashmont is an extremely diverse community.
Notable residents in the Ashmont Hill area include architects like Harrison Atwood and Edwin J. Lewis. Atwood even designed his own home in Ashmont on Alban Street. The American Impressionist Edmund Tarbell and painter Frank Shapleigh resided in Ashmont, as did Chansonetta Stanley Emmons, a famous photographer whose brothers went on to invent the Stanley Steamer.
When English settlers found their way to Dorchester in the 1630s, they claimed everything from Dorchester up to Rhode Island. While that soon changed, the area that became Ashmont remained farmland for many, many years. Around 1784, there was a farmhouse that stood in Ashmont where General Henry Knox resided. For a time, Daniel Webster lived there as well.
Ashmont was developed after Dorchester was annexed by Boston in 1870. There are two sides to Ashmont that grew. On the western side, the Welles estate shaped the neighborhood. On the eastern side, south of Ashmont Street, the Carruth family, and their estate had the most influence.
During the Victorian era, Dorchester and all of its neighborhoods was a popular location for Boston’s elite families. For example, the grandparents and mother of John F. Kennedy resided in the Ashmont Hill neighborhood when John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald was Boston’s mayor.
The All Saints Church located just north of the Ashmont Hill/Peabody Square MBTA station was designed by Ralph Adams Cram. It was finished in 1892 and has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. Currently, the Ashmont Hill Architectural Conservation District is pending for recognition as a Boston Landmark.
As mentioned earlier, there are plenty of places of interest to see while you are in Ashmont. The main roads—Ashmont Street and Dorchester Avenue—are lined with businesses and beautiful houses. Take a moment to stop by Peabody Square and admire the atmosphere, along with the sight of All Saints Church among the trees.
Nearby, you can find several shopping outlets, along with the Ashmont Farmers Market. There is also the local favorite, Tavolo Ristorante. The restaurant serves up hearty Italian cuisine. Ashmont Grill, an American Restaurant, is to the north, just beside Peabody Square. To the west is Lala Caribbean, a Haitian restaurant.
However, Ashmont is truly a treasure in terms of architecture. Many French cottages lined Harley, Roslin, Welles, and Ocean streets, as well as homes with the Queen Anne style. Some even use the complicated Stick Style. Any student of architecture, or even those who simply love looking at historical homes, will enjoy a trip to Ashmont.
While not within the bounds of Ashmont, the Pierce House, a museum, is to the east. Farther south is Dorchester Park, Cedar Grove Cemetery, and the Neponset River Reservation.
Whether you are visiting from Boston or are making a pit stop from a day at Blue Hills Reservation or somewhere else, Ashmont has something for everyone.
Perhaps you’re a busy Ashmont parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Ashmont don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task. You can arrive at home knowing that your house has been cleaned by a qualified team of professionals and will shine from top to bottom.
