SMALL DETAILS MAKE A DIFFERENCE…
Ashmont Hill referral home cleaners adhere to the highest quality cleaning standards.
That alone makes a huge difference.
Dorchester has both diversity and history. One of the more historical locations happens to be the Ashmont Hill section of Ashmont, where there are streets upon streets of homes from the 19th century. The buildings are stunning, and the neighborhood is quiet, making it the perfect place to make your own walking tour. If you love architecture, then you won’t want to miss Ashmont Hill during your Boston travels.
Ashmont Hill is part of the Ashmont area of the Dorchester neighborhood and is along the Milton/Boston border. The main streets include Dorchester Avenue, Gallivan Boulevard, and Ashmont Street. Presently Ashmont Hill is considered an Architectural Conservation District and its landmark status is pending.
Ashmont Hill has had several notable residents throughout the years. Harrison Atwood and Edwin J. Lewis, two architects responsible for many buildings around Boston and beyond, lived in Ashmont Hill. Atwood even designed his own estate on Alban Street. Chansonetta Stanley Emmons, whose brothers invented the famous Stanley Steamer, lived in Ashmont Hill alongside Impressionist painter Edmund Tarbell and another painter, Frank Shapleigh.
John “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald and his family had lived in a mansion on Harley and Welles Street that, sadly, burned down in 1938. The house, however, had been the site of a marriage between Fitzgerald’s daughter Rose and Joseph Kennedy.
Did you know that prior to Boston becoming a bustling city, it was Dorchester and its neighborhoods that covered much of the land? When the English settlers first arrived, Dorchester extended all the way to Rhode Island! But even with all that land claimed, many parts around Dorchester, including Ashmont and Ashmont Hill, remained as tracts of farmland.
The development of Ashmont Hill is a result of growth caused by the annexation of Dorchester in 1870. Once the land was claimed, more people flooded in. The western side of the neighborhood was first to develop, and north of Welles Avenue was laid out for a massive estate belonging to the Welles family. It was the Welles’ that made the most progress in Ashmont Hill, however. Around 1850, John Welles was gifted land in and around Ashmont Hill. Then, two years after annexation, he gave his grandson, George Derby Welles, a plot of land that was named Welles Hill. This included Walton, Alban, Roslin, Harley, Ocean, and Welles Streets.
On the eastern edge of the neighborhood, you can find lands that were developed for the Carruth family estate. Because of this, much of Ashmont Hill is covered in large Victorian homes and estates, while Dorchester Avenue became the urban heart of Ashmont. Other sections of the neighborhood were prompted by the construction of the Old Colony Railroad and the Peabody Square station. After the 1870s, wealthy professionals from Boston started building houses in Ashmont Hill.
Ashmont Hill today remains a tranquil place full of preserved architecture and an ambiance that whispers of the past. You will feel as if you have been transported to another time while walking the streets. Speaking of walking, Boston By Foot runs 90-minute tours of Ashmont Hill so you can see the estates and Victorian homes found throughout the neighborhood. Of course, you can very easily wander the roadways of Talbot Avenue, Alban Street, and Welles Avenue yourself to see all the beautiful homes in an array of architectural styles.
Beyond sightseeing and snapping photographs of the architecture around Ashmont Hill, you can enjoy a few other things as well. First, Peabody Square. Though small, the square has rather picturesque and is also beside the location of the Ashmont Farmers Market and several other stores.
If you get hungry while walking up and down the streets, take a stroll down Dorchester Avenue. There are several restaurants along the way, including the Italian restaurant Tavolo Ristorante right near the station and Ashmont Grill across from Peabody Square. Head slightly farther north, and you reach a line of restaurants like El Barrio Mexican Grill and two pizza parlors.
Want to check out other fine examples of early American architecture? You can venture east along Ashmont Street and down towards Adams Village, where you can find the Pierce House. Further south, near Cedar Grove, you can visit Dorchester Park and Cedar Grove Cemetery, with the latter having an old chapel.
Getting to Ashmont Hill is quick from Boston. Take the MBTA Red Line to Ashmont/Peabody Square Station. Optionally, you can take the Mattapan Trolley to Cedar Grove and walk towards the Ashmont area.
Perhaps you’re a busy Ashmont Hill parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
