Looking for a place of natural beauty and history that seems far different from anywhere you been in Boston? The good news is that you don’t have to go far. A short journey from Boston in the city of Newton is the village called Auburndale, or just “the Dale.” Here, you will be surrounded by historical houses and architecture, as well as a lot of greenery.
Compared to other places you may visit in Massachusetts, Auburndale has a small population of just over 9,000 people. Those who live in Auburndale call it a lovely place, full of suburban streets and parks and tons of gorgeous scenery. While there is not much to do in forms of museums or nightlife, Auburndale is the ideal spot to find a patch of grass and have a picnic or go exploring.
Auburndale is located at the western edge of Newton, right along Newton Lower Falls, Waban, and West Newton. Across the water is Angleside and Brandeis University. Within Auburndale is Lasell University, but only a handful of university students rent in the area. Most of the population owns their home which is known to have relatively high real estate prices.
Within Auburndale Square, there are several noteworthy establishments, including the Plummer Memorial Library and the Turtle Lane Playhouse. Amazingly, Auburndale is also the location of dozens of addresses listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include:
The entire Auburndale Historic District has 275 properties since it includes two National Register Districts.
Auburndale was first settled by William Robinson in 1678. He built a house that later became Freeman Street. Presently, the oldest house in Auburndale is on Auburn Street and was constructed by William Robinson in 1730. During these early years, Auburndale had no major significance. Like Newton Lower Falls, most of the settlers worked along the river as millers and lived off the land. The Worcester Turnpike (later known as Massachusetts Route 9) was built through Auburndale in 1809, and the Boston and Worchester Railroad eventually brought more traffic as of the 1840s.
It wasn’t until around 1850 when Auburndale started to gain some attention, due to the founding of Lasell University. The institution was originally named the Auburndale Female Seminary by Edward Lasell of Williams College. Lasell University is also one of the first known junior colleges in the United States before later becoming the liberal arts university that it is today.
As for the larger historic district—the Lasell Neighborhood Historic District—that was constructed between the 19th and 20th centuries for the university. It was meant to include housing and campus facilities.
If you are looking to visit Auburndale today, you will find a peaceful place with quiet streets and historical properties abound. The village is like a snapshot of the past, so you should bring a camera (or keep your phone charged). Headfirst towards Woodland Road and Grove Street to see the historic homes around the Lasell University campus. The campus of the university, too, has plenty to see, including the Hamel Visitor Center and the Walker Center of Ecumenical Exchange.
The green spaces are numerous. Be sure to bring your walking shoes. Just within Auburndale’s borders is the sprawling Norumbega Park, from which you can see the Norumbega Tower across the river. There is also the beautiful Auburndale Park, which connects to Wabasso Road. South, in Woodland, is the Woodland Golf Club and the Brae Burn Country Club. Closer to West Newton is the Dolan Pond Conservation Area.
If you find yourself getting hungry from all the walking around you’ll be doing, head back towards Auburndale Station. There are several restaurants and eateries to pick up something. Starbucks and Dunkin’ are great for a quick bite, but you can also find delectable goodies at Bruegger’s Bagels or Breadsong Bakery. There is also Tom’s Pizza & Sandwich Shop, a local favorite.
Getting to Auburndale from Boston is simple if you wish to use the Commuter Line. The Framingham/Worcester Line will take you to either West Newton or Auburndale station, depending on where you want to get off. Optionally, the D Branch of the MBTA Green Line will take you to Riverside. Auburndale is just north of that.
Perhaps you’re a busy Auburndale parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Auburndale don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task. You can arrive at home knowing that your house has been cleaned by a qualified team of professionals and will shine from top to bottom.
