The History of Back Bay

Before the 19th century when there was no buildable land, Back Bay was exactly as its name implies: a bay. Located west of the Shawmut Peninsula and the Charles River, the bay was either marshy or tidal. Before colonists arrived, Native Americans had used the area for fishing for over 5,000 years, which was evidenced during construction in 1913 when remnants of fish weirs were unearthed.

Before that discovery, Back Bay needed a dam. In 1814, the proposition was to build a milldam that could also be a toll road. However, there were issues with the construction, and in 1857, the land was “made” by filling in the area. Yet, the Back Bay that most people know it was filled in around 1882 when a project to raise the land known as Kenmore Square began. The filling project ended in 1900 by the Fens.

The project was one of the largest land reclamation events in history. It began in 1820 and significantly increased the size of the Shawmut Peninsula.

During the reclamation project to the present time, many historically significant buildings were constructed as well. This includes the Trinity Church, monuments in Copley Square, the Gibson House (and museum), the Boston Public Library, the Old South Church, the Berkeley Building, and the Stephen L. Brown Building. Later, in 1964, the Prudential Tower was erected. In 2002, Boston’s eighth tallest skyscraper, 111 Huntington Avenue, came to be.
