Back Bay is what you think of when you hear about Boston. Nestled alongside the Charles River and home to many beautiful homes, the best shopping, restaurants, and a somewhat Parisian ambiance, Back Bay will leave quite an impression on you. The area is split into two parts: Back Bay East and West. Today, we are going to introduce you to Back Bay East, including what to expect, what to see, and more.
Back Bay—both the eastern and western sides—are famous for the rows upon rows of Victorian brownstone properties that make the streets photogenic and popular for long walks. Back Bay East happens to be where most of Boston’s culture is based. Here, you find Copley Square, along with the Boston Public Library, one of the finest institutions in America.
Though there are many homes throughout Back Bay, it is difficult to gauge how many people dwell in Back Bay East. The current population of the whole area is around 18,200 people, meaning that around 9,000 may live in Back Bay East alone. Since the area is prime real estate, dwelling in Back Bay East may also be rather expensive. Would it be worth it, though? Of course.
The biggest age group in Back Bay East is between 25-44, and many residents have Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
However, while young and wealthy professionals are living in Back Bay East, there is way more available for visitors to experience. You certainly won’t be bored while wandering the streets.
Before Back Bay became a rival for the City of Lights, it was water west of the Shawmut Peninsula. The bay’s water level rose and fell with the tide. Around 1814, the Boston and Roxbury Mill Corporation constructed a milldam that also served as a toll road. The dam stopped the rise and fall of the tide, but it created a sanitation problem and produced foul odors.
Since the cost was deemed too high to continue, the dam was shut down, and the 1857 project to fill in the land began. This was the birth of the Back Bay area. What is seen today was finished in 1882. Much of the old dam is buried beneath Beacon Street.
Did you know that the whole of Back Bay was meant to look like Paris? That is why you are bound to find al fresco dining and lamp-lined streets. Though it was originally meant to be mainly residential at one time, Back Bay East today is a mix of urban shopping and convenience alongside the elegant living.
Because Back Bay East is home to the famous Copley Square, it is bound to be on anyone’s itinerary. There are dozens of things to see and do, as well.
You should head to the awe-inspiring Trinity Church, the Boston Public Library, the Old South Church, and the famous Hancock buildings, which are easily identified along the Boston skyline. The three skyscrapers include the Stephen L. Brown Buildings (built-in 1922), the Old John Hancock Building (1947), and the latest John Hancock Building (1972).
Stroll down Commonwealth Ave to enjoy some of the city green before slipping to the gorgeous Boston Public Garden. Or, you can turn down one of the many roads to see either the lovely houses or find a nice cafe. Some favorites include Tatte Bakery & Cafe and the Thinking Cup for some pastries and coffee. If you are up to a more substantial meal, try out Buttermilk & Bourbon, a Southern restaurant that is sure to please. Lolita Back Bay, serving Mexican fare, offers spicier entrees.
All around Copley station and Arlington station, you can find hundreds of shopping opportunities, as well. You are bound to love the area, especially if you are looking for stylish clothing.
In short, Back Bay East is the heart and soul of Boston. You can’t come to the capital without visiting this place—and now you know exactly what awaits!
