Boston has several recognized neighborhoods that are diverse and unique in both the location and their population. The smallest neighborhood happens to be Bay Village, which is nestled between Back Bay, the Theatre District, and other sections of downtown. It is approximately three blocks of tree-lined streets and mostly residential. Yet, if you think a walkthrough Bay Village wouldn’t be fun, think again. There are plenty of reasons why Bay Village should be a part of your Boston travels.
Being that Bay Village is tiny, it has about 1,300 residents and a mere 837 housing units, most of which are rowhouses. The architecture of these houses, however, reflects the much grander residences along with Beacon Hill, and that is because the people who designed Beacon Hill eventually settled in Bay Village. In 1938, Bay Village, which was noted as being bounded by Tremont, Piedmont, Isabella, and Cortes Streets, was named the Bay Village Historic District. This means that exteriors of the rowhouses were from then on protected.
The roads of Bay Village are narrow and interconnected, forming a web of one-way streets that are perfect for pedestrians. The ambiance is romantic, for the sidewalks are brick-paved, and there are gas streetlamps. One street still has the original cobblestones. Bay Village also has several “vest-pocket parks,” or small parks that are almost hidden. One of those parks is Eliot Norton Park.
Are you a fan of Edgar Allan Poe? Then you should know that he was born in Bay Village. His parents were actors who worked in the Theatre District. You can find a commemorative plaque on Boylston Street. Sadly, the house where Poe was born—62 Carver Street—is no more. Another square that had been built in his honor was removed when streets were rearranged many years ago, but in 2009, the new Edgar Allan Poe Square was built between Charles and Boylston.
Bay Village has been known by many names. Originally, the neighborhood was just a body of water on the western edge of the Boston Neck. Once the landfill project was complete, it was part of South Bay and was cut off by the waterline that cut through Arlington Street. Then, in the 1820s, Ephraim Marsh, a developer, partnered with Francis Cabot Lowell to extend Back Bay and South End ever farther. This lead to the formation of Bay Village, also known as South Cove, Kerry Village, and Church Street District throughout the years.
On Fayette Street—named after Marquis de Layfayette, an American Revolutionary soldier—are houses that date back to the Federal Period. Melrose Street is replete with five-story townhouses featuring Greek Revival architecture. Developers then constructed residential “hotels” using Victorian notes along with Isabella and Cortes Streets. These structures have been preserved.
One of the most historic happenings of Bay Village would be the Cocoanut Grove Fire. In 1942, the nightclub called Cocoanut Grove went up in flames. 492 people died in the blaze. This lead to more fire codes being issued throughout the United States so that so similar tragedy could occur. In 1993, a memorial plaque was installed near the original location of the nightclub.
These days Bay Village is considered something of a secret oasis that mirrors Beacon Hill. Aside from rowhouses, you can find shops and restaurants and an inviting atmosphere. It is the perfect place to go when you are between other Boston attractions or are looking for a little reprieve from the noise and energy of more populated neighborhoods.
If you just wish to walk around Bay Village, the key points of interest would be the memorial plaques for Edgar Allan Poe and Cocoanut Grove. You can also look at the architecture of the Salada Tea Headquarters, which looks like an ancient relief on the building. Isabella Street Park is a quiet place nearby to sit, but you can also enjoy the charming Bay Village Garden on Melrose Street. Statler Park is on Stuart Street, just outside of Bay Village, as is the Eliot Norton Park.
A handful of excellent dining options also exist in Bay Village, including Citrus & Salt Boston, a highly recommended Mexican restaurant; Grill 23 & Bar, a sophisticated steak house; and the humble but renowned Mike & Patty’s sandwich shop. There are also several hotels and theaters nearby, including the Wilbur and Shear Madness.
Bay Village is also one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Boston and has plenty of ways to get around. Several bus routes run through the neighborhood, and there are several MBTA stations nearby, including Arlington (Green Line), Tufts Medical Center (Orange Line), Back Bay (Orange Line), and Boylston (Green Line). Keep in mind that on-street parking is rarely available in Bay Village, so if you drive, you will need to find a commercial parking garage.
Perhaps you’re a busy Bay Village parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Bay Village don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task. You can arrive at home knowing that your house has been cleaned by a qualified team of professionals and will shine from top to bottom.
