BELMONT’S MOST TRUSTED HOUSE CLEANING REFERRAL AGENCY

To the west of the Boston metropolitan area is a serene town called Belmont, where history sleeps among rolling green knolls and a quiet suburban atmosphere. The town center is calm but loaded with small boutiques and eateries that can take you on an adventure. Though small, Belmont, MA is sure to become a favorite place to stop by for some quality time with family and friends, or even on your own for a day trip.

The People and Places of Belmont

As of 2016, Belmont was home to over 26,000 residents and boasted over 16,200 registered voters. The town has a diverse population. Whites make up around 77 percent of the population, and Asians make up 14 percent. Following that is the Hispanic and Latino population at 5 percent. The biggest age group would be those in their twenties to fifties, but almost 25 percent of the population is made up of children. Most families in Belmont are wealthy since the median household income is around $115,000.

South of the Belmont station and commercial area is the neighborhood called Waverley, near the McLean Hospital and green space. This area is dominated by residential homes. Unlike other suburbs of Boston, Belmont has its own public schooling system. There are four elementary schools, a single public middle school, and a high school, Belmont High. The high school was awarded a gold medal and named one of the best high schools in the United States in 2009. Optionally, students can attend the Minuteman Career and Technical High School in Lexington.

The History of Belmont

Although Belmont was established well after most of the other settlements in Massachusetts, that did not prevent it from accumulating a list of events and points of interest. Belmont was founded in 1859, after citizens from other locations, like Watertown, Waltham, Arlington, and so on decided to move from their towns and form a new one. Another motivation was that these people wanted a dry town—no alcohol could be bought or sold.

The town was originally called Bellmont, after the sprawling 200-acre estate owned by John Perkins Cushing. Currently, Cushing Square bears his name and is all that is left after the manor burned down.

Once founded, Belmont was mainly agricultural. Then in the 1900s, the community shifted towards commercial greenhouses and exported most of its products to Boston.

Many railroads were laid throughout Belmont, and some of the more beautiful stations still stand today. Seek out the Boston & Maine Railroad Station at Belmont Center and the Wellington Hill Station. Both are worthy of a few pictures.

Belmont Today

Belmont has plenty to offer to local residences and travelers alike. Whether you come by car or train, the areas surrounding Belmont and Waverley stations are lively and fun. You can find a variety of restaurants, bars, and cafes, as well as places of historical significance. Belmont also has wonderful parks and reservations, where you can unwind in nature.

Take a stroll along the Pleasant Street Historic District around Belmont Town Hall and towards the Plymouth Congregational Church of Belmont. You will see a number of beautiful buildings that have been preserved throughout the years. Be sure to pick up some ice cream from Rancatore’s, a local favorite, or grab some authentic Thai from Patou Thai while you’re there.

During the summer months, you can cool down at the Underwood Pool, a public pool that has been open since 1912. For winter recreation, the Viglirolo Skating Rink is the perfect place to strap on some ice skates.

You can get some exercise walking the trails around Claypit Pond or settle down for a picnic. There is also Lone Tree Hill, the Habitat Education Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, and also the Beaver Brook Reservation to visit. If you love golfing, be sure to check out the Belmont Country Club.

Historical points of interest include the William Flagg Homer House, the Boston Massachusetts Temple of the Latter Day Saints, the Edwin O. Reischauer Memorial House, and the home of William Dean Howells, known as Redtop.

All in all, Belmont is a place of fascinating history and beautiful sights. Come for the atmosphere but stay for the fun! There are shops, restaurants, and parks aplenty, so you never have to worry about keeping yourself busy. It’s a great destination for day trips or even a quick stop on your way to or from Boston.
