One of the things people love about Boston is the vibrant and dynamic neighborhoods that make up the city. Brighton, a peaceful and youthful area, is becoming a prime location for professionals and growing families. The beautiful neighborhood can be found on the shores of the Charles River and is home to numerous small, independent businesses.
If you are looking for a quaint place to visit in Boston that feels more like a town, then you should head over to Brighton.
Brighton is also known as “Little Cambridge” and is found just beyond the energetic reaches of Allston. Brighton is where a vast number of students from Boston University and Boston College call home, but it has attracted young professionals, families, and people from all over.
As of 2010, the population in Brighton was around 43,000. The median age was 32, and the largest age group was within the 25-34 age bracket. Around 75 percent of the population is white, with Asian Americans and Hispanics or Latinos following behind (12 percent and 7 percent, respectively). Since most of the residents of Brighton graduated from a four-year college, the median income of the area is slightly higher than the rest of Boston, and that means housing prices are also a little high.
There are four elementary schools and four secondary schools. One of the schools, Our Lady of Presentation School, is being considered for landmark status. Other nearby institutions include Boston University and Boston College.
Brighton’s history begins in 1630 when Europeans first settled in the Boston area. Originally, Brighton was part of Watertown. Then, the Massachusetts Bay Colony decided to more to Newtowne (currently Cambridge) in 1634, and thus the first permanent settlement began. For many years, until 1807, English settlers called their little section of Cambridge “Little Cambridge.” But once they seceded, the area was renamed as Brighton. In 1874, Brighton became an official neighborhood in Boston.
However, that isn’t all there is to know about this neighborhood. For over 400 years, Brighton has been a significant region in American history. In 1776, the Brighton Cattle Market was founded to assist in feeding the Continental Army under George Washington during the Revolutionary War.
Since then, Brighton has developed alongside Boston. Elements of the past blend in with the future, making it a dynamic environment for old and new businesses alike.
These days, Brighton is a whirlwind of historical edifices mixed with pubs, bakeries, ethnic restaurants, and small businesses along the main thoroughfare, Washington Street. For residents and visitors, Brighton is an amazing place to spend your time. One of the best places to explore if you love art would be Unbound Visual Arts, a nonprofit that operates as an art gallery and community space.
Perhaps you’re hungry? Then do as the locals do and chill at the Brighton Bodega, a diner that has a tremendous assortment of oyster dishes and other cherished specialties. Or maybe you’re up for something more hearty? Check out the Porter Belly’s Pub, an Irish pub that has live music nights and traditional Gaelic fare. Once you have dined on something savory, you can take a short walk along Washington Street and visit one of the many bakeries.
Afterward, head to Rogers Park, a patch of green right off of the main street. The park has basketball and tennis courts, a baseball field, and even a dog park. In the evening, you can check out Flatbread Company and Brighton Bowl, where you can knock out some bowling pins while dining on excellent pizza.
Lastly, you don’t want to miss a visit to the Brighton-Allston Heritage Museum, especially if you want to know more about how Brighton got to be the awesome place it is today. The museum gives you an in-depth look at the history and heritage of the area and is completely free.
There is a lot to do in Brighton on any given day. Community events are held regularly, and with public spaces for art, sports, and more, you might never want to leave! Whether you are visiting Boston for a day and want to take a day trip or have been in MA your whole life, Brighton has something to offer everyone.
