That alone makes a huge difference.
Close to the diverse streets of Allston is another neighborhood of Boston, Brighton. Here, you can find a swarm of college and university students, young professionals, and a cultural cluster of restaurants and stores that are both affordable and fun. Brighton has been at the center of American history for hundreds of years, and today it is a fun and happening place to dine and find entertainment, no matter your age. If you plan on visiting Brighton, you can’t go without seeing the historic heart, also known as Brighton Center.
Here is everything you need to know:
When you search for Brighton Center on Google Maps, for instance, you might find that nothing shows up! But that doesn’t mean that the Brighton Center Historic District is small or something to be looked over. In fact, it is expansive, just as Brighton is expansive, and even blends into Allston, which is why these neighborhoods are usually referred to as Allston-Brighton by the locals. Brighton Center is technically the commercial core of Brighton found at the intersection of Washington Street and Market Street. However, some may also say that most of Washington Street, lined with shops and restaurants, is the true “center.”
The estimated total population of Brighton is around 43,000. The population density is slightly higher than the citywide average, and the median age, as of 2010, was 32. Most of the population is between 25-34 years old, due to the number of educational institutions in the area and student housing. Interestingly, aside from apartments and student housing, Brighton (including Brighton Center) has several expensive and historical residences that were constructed before 1939.
The Brighton Center Historic District was named as part of the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The district is bordered by Washington Street, Market Street, and Chestnut Hill Avenue. Any adjacent streets and alleys between them are also included. The oldest part is the Market Street Burial Ground, which was founded in 1764.
The old Brighton Center Commercial District—now referred to as a Historic District—is one of the more significant areas shared between Allston and Brighton. The intersection of Washington and Market Streets was at the heart of the community’s religious practices during the 18th century. There, the first school was constructed in 1722, and the first meetinghouse in 1744.
By the beginning of the 1830s, Brighton Center was the soul of the agricultural community. There was a town hall, a firehouse, a library, churches, and even a post office. Blacksmith shops, banks, general stores, and a tavern were also available to the population. Aside from businesses, a cluster of private homes was constructed along Washington Street. Once Cambridge Street and the River Street Bridge were constructed in 1810, and later, Brighton Avenue in 1824, Brighton Center was more connected to Boston and Cambridge than ever before.
During the early 1900s, Brighton Center underwent renovations that transformed traditional wooden buildings with stone masonry work. The architectural projects brought a wave of immigrant entrepreneurs that wanted to settle somewhere new. From there, Brighton Center evolved as Boston and Cambridge did.
The Brighton Allston Historical Society (BAHS) has a photo collection of Brighton Center that can be viewed on the BAHS website.
Planning a trip to Brighton Center today? You will find tons of places to shop and eat on a budget, as well as parks, green spaces, and a friendly community. There are also many beautiful sights to be seen, so if you love photography, you might want to bring a camera.
The first place anyone visiting Brighton Center should go is the focal point of the historical district—Market Street Historic Burying Ground. There, you can learn more about Brighton Center. Then take a walk towards the Public Grounds and back towards Washington Street, so you can check out all the restaurants and cafes. Other points of interest along Washington Street of a few blocks away include Brighton Square, Foster Street Hill, Gallagher Park, and Oak Square.
All along Washington Street, you can find fashion boutiques, tech stores, galleries, and fitness studios. Some of the restaurants that are highly recommended by the locals include South of the Clouds noodle shop, Esperia Grill Greek restaurant, Devlin’s Bistro & Bar, Athan’s Bakery, and closer to Oak Square, the organic restaurant, Energize.
Getting to Brighton Center can be difficult if you plan on getting there on foot because there are no nearby MBTA stations. The closest stations are the South Street light rail station (B Branch of the Green Line) and Warren Street Station. If you take the bus, however, the 51, 57A, 86, 501, and 503 will drop you off right at the intersection.
Perhaps you’re a busy Brighton Center parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Brighton Center don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task.
