Just four miles from Downtown Boston is the neighborhood known as Dudley-Brunswick King, or only Brunswick King, by the locals. The community is diverse and dynamic, and there is always something exciting going on. Full of culture, Brunswick King has everything you need to discover facets of history and worldly knowledge, as well as great food, shopping, and green space. If you are looking to see historic buildings and districts while enjoying a vibrant community, Brunswick King is the place to go.
The historical Upham’s Corner borders Brunswick King to the east, Grove Hall to the south, Nubian Square and Washington Park to the west, and South End to the north. It is part of Roxbury, one of the most populated official neighborhoods of Boston. The northern tip of Dorchester also skirts along the eastern border of the community.
One of the things that Dudley-Brunswick King is known for is the volume of non-profit organizations along the main thoroughfare of Dudley Street. You can find the headquarters of organizations like CommonWealth Kitchen, the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative, Project Hope, and the Food Project. The latter has hired 120 teenagers from areas like Brunswick King to assist in growing nearly 200,000 lbs of fresh produce every single year. More than 180,000 servings of fruits and vegetables have been donated throughout Massachusetts. The other organizations are much like the Food Project and are helping make Dudley-Brunswick King a progressive and welcoming community for all.
The community is densely packed, compared to other regions of the Greater Boston area. However, a population of over 16,000 in a 0.67 square mile area is not uncommon for Roxbury. As of 2017, Blacks made up about 52 percent of the people, Hispanics and Latinos accounted for around 30 percent, and other races made up the remaining 18 percent. Brunswick King is known for having a very young population, with most of the residents being between the ages of 5 to 20 years old. There are also many families living in Brunswick King, and so most of the streets are purely residential.
Residents have access to a selection of educational and cultural centers, such as a branch of the Boston Public Library, the Oodua African Movie Center, and nearby Upham’s Corner for shopping. There are also several well-developed green spaces in Dudley-Brunswick King, including Mary Hannon Park, Ceylon Park, Clifford Playground, Brunswick King Play Area, and the Dacia/Woodcliff Streets Garden. Because of the Food Project, there are also multiple community gardens available.
Brunswick King is on the eastern edge of Roxbury and developed alongside the growth of areas like Nubian Square (formerly Dudley Square). During the 19th century, many African American families moved to Roxbury. The Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI) has been instrumental in reshaping the areas around Nubian Square and Dudley-Brunswick King since the early 2000s. As of 2014, DSNI has assisted in the construction of more energy-efficient buildings and more modernized residences.
One of the most historical pieces of the Dudley-Brunswick King neighborhood is the Shirley-Eustis House, which is located at 33 Shirley Street. The house is now considered a National Historic Landmark. Aside from being a stunning estate to visit, the house is home to a lot of history. Built between 1747 and 1751, the Shirley-Eustis House originally sat on 33 acres of land. It was owned by William Shirley, the past governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, and served as his summer home. Today, it is one of the four remaining Royal Governor houses in the United States.
In 1763, Eliakim Hutchinson, Shirley’s son-in-law and Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas for Suffolk County, received the house from William Shirley. Later, when Shirley retired from serving as Governor in the Bahamas, he moved back in with Hutchinson and his daughter in 1763 and died at the estate in 1771.
After the death of Hutchinson in 1775, the house was utilized by the Sixth Foot Regiment, led by Colonel Asa Whitcomb. In 1778, the house was seized by Loyalists. Then, it was unoccupied until 1782, where it became the possession of multiple owners, including a French horticulturist from Haiti, a China merchant, and a real estate speculator. Then, in the 1800s, William Eustis, the Secretary of War for James Madison and later the Ambassador to the Netherlands, acquired the Shirley-Eustis House (hence the name).
In 1913, after the house had been abandoned for years following the death of Eustis and his wife, William Sumner Appleton bought the land and founded the Shirley-Eustis Association. In 1960, the property was declared a National Historic Landmark. Since then, it has been the focus of restoration projects, landscaping projects, and has even won awards for its refurbishment.
When you visit Brunswick King today, you are going to find a proud and energetic community, as well as history, culture, and green spaces. The winding streets are full of hidden gems, too. On the main roads—Dudley Street and West Cottage Street—you can find some attractions like the Shirley-Eustis mentioned above House and Mary Hannon Park. Off of W. Cottage Street is one of the Food Project Lots. Blue Hill Avenue also provides the area with several convenient businesses that are worth checking out. The road also takes you to the largest park in Boston, Franklin Park.
Be sure to support some of the local businesses in Brunswick King while you are here. One of the best ways to do that is to check out the restaurants. Local favorites include Merengue, a Dominican restaurant, on Julian Street; El Pirata Sunspear on Brook Avenue; Nos Casa, a Cape Verdean restaurant; and Ideal Sub Shop. The popular Bully Boy Distillers is located near Clifford Playground. Tours are available throughout the week, and you can try vodka, rum, whiskey, and even cocktails on tap.
The easiest way to reach Dudley-Brunswick King is to take the MBTA Commuter Lines (Fairmount Line or Franklin/Foxborough Lines) to Uphams Corner Station. Newmarket Station, on the same lines, is to the north while Four Corners/Geneva is to the south.
Perhaps you’re a Brunswick King parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
