When gazing at a map of Boston’s West End or of the northern part of Downtown, you might notice that there were a few roads creating something of a triangle. This historic district is called the Bulfinch Triangle. In the past, this was an innovative landscape of blossoming businesses. Now, it is both commercial and residential, with hotels, restaurants, businesses, and governmental buildings lining the streets. No doubt, you will find yourself here, so why not learn more about what the Bulfinch Triangle Historic District has to offer?
The Bulfinch Triangle is also a historic district that is found between Downtown North and the West End, right between Beacon Hill and North End. To the south is the City Hall Plaza, and the Charles River frames the north. The Triangle was formed by three roads: North Washington, Merrimac, and Causeway Streets. Originally, the apex of the triangle was formed at the top of Haymarket, but it is now the site of the Government Center Garage. Because of this, the Triangle is now, more or less, a quadrangle.
In 1986, the area was added to the National Register of Historic Places for the number of well-preserved buildings that were constructed between the 1870s and early 1900s. One example is the 1887 Lockhart Building.
In the middle of the 17th century, the land once called North Cove was damned up by local millers who wanted to create Mill Pond. By 1804, the Mill Pond Corporation had successfully developed the land needed for the project. They contacted the architect Charles Bulfinch, who decided to layout the area with a triangular pattern, making Causeway Street the base and Haymarket Square the southward-pointing apex. While Bulfinch didn’t design a single building present in Bulfinch Triangle, he did envision the streets being lined with a mixture of residences and commercial establishments.
At the end of 1830, when Mill Pond was complete, the Bulfinch Triangle district was full of stables, taverns, hotels, pubs, and much more. Because of its location, it was the ideal place for hardware and furniture manufacturing. The area flourished well into the 20th century.
By the 1930s, the Great Depression struck and caused a major change to the Bulfinch Triangle. Businesses that had been operating for many years were forced to close their doors. During the 1950s, the area was further decimated with the construction of the Green and Orange lines. It was noted that close to a million square feet of buildings had to be demolished.
However, at the beginning of the 2000s, several initiatives commenced reshaping the Bulfinch Triangle, including the construction of apartment buildings, a few green spaces, and more. Now, the area is becoming a place of innovation once again.
Whenever you visit Boston, you will probably use the MBTA North Station at least once. That means you are already close enough to the Bulfinch Triangle Historic District, so why not take a look? The area is at the heart of the West End and encircled by famous sites and attractions, such as the Paul Revere House, City Hall Plaza, Boston Public Market, Boston Common, and much more.
Alone, the Bulfinch Triangle has more than enough things to delight you. The streets are lined with restaurants and bars and several 3- and 4-star hotels. Because of the proximity to the Mass General Hospital, there are also many healthcare offices to the west. To the east of the district, you can find even more famous eateries, sights, and sounds.
Because of the central location, Bulfinch Triangle is the ideal location to book accommodations. You wouldn’t have to go too far to catch a train or walk to get something tasty to eat. Popular like The Greatest Bar and Porters Bar and Grill is excellent for meeting with the locals, and you can get your fill of Boston sports while you are at it. If you are looking for a slightly more upscale scene, head to The Harp or West End Johnnie’s.
Some points of interest include BEERWORKS, a brewpub on Canal Street, and the buildings along Merrimac and Lancaster Streets. If you love architecture, you would do well to bring a camera. There is a lot to see here.
Overall, the Bulfinch Triangle is a feast for the eyes and the belly. Be sure to mark it off on your map of Boston so that you don’t miss everything it has to offer while you visit.
