Boston is a mixture of new and old everywhere you look. You can see this in the spread of the urban zones that swirl together historical districts and futuristic innovations. One of those places happens to be the Bunker Hill area of Charlestown, the oldest neighborhood in the capital of Massachusetts. Bunker Hill is a favorite location of visitors to the city, for it boasts a wealth of historical significance and several attractions to delight you and everyone else tagging along.
If you are planning a trip to Bunker Hill in Boston, here is what you need to know:
The neighborhood of Bunker Hill is sometimes thought of as the Bunker Hill Community College—where Dr. Sean Maguire from Good Will Hunting teaches psychology—it is not limited to a park and college campus. The neighborhood is the southern part of Charlestown, the oldest area in all of Boston. Because of that, Charlestown and Bunker Hill are a wealth of historical sites and attractions. Aside from museums, there is also a wide selection of restaurants and nightlife.
The Bunker Hill area of Charlestown encompasses most of the district and is home to over 23,000 people. The neighborhood is diverse, with a mixture of races, and is also rather dense, especially in the more low-income sections of the neighborhood. A large group of residents are also foreign-born.
Many places of interest around Bunker Hill are part of Boston’s Freedom Trail, which ends at the Bunker Hill Monument. There is also the warship USS Constitution, launched in 1797 and still afloat. These days, the warship is docked at the Charlestown Navy Yard and is part of the park. Charlestown is also where Paul Revere began his midnight ride to announce that the British had arrived. Also, Warren Tavern, opened in 1780, continues to operate and was once frequented by Paul Revere.
The area that was first known as Mishawum by the Native Americans was first settled by Thomas and Jane Walford in 1624. Walford was able to make an agreement with the Indians for his group to settle on the land, and soon they were thriving. Charlestown was founded in 1628 then later settled by even more Puritan colonists around July 1629. Many others arrived during the Great Migration but didn’t stay long.
In June 1775, the Charlestown Peninsula became the site for a brutal American Revolutionary battle—the Battle of Bunker Hill. Colonel William Prescott and his force of 1,200 men occupied Bunker Hill overnight and built fortifications so that, when the British in Boston awoke, they would find themselves within range of American cannon fire. As history tells it, the British attacked Bunker Hill, and Colonel Prescott shouted the famous line, “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes.” The Americans were able to hold off the British until munitions ran out, forcing them to retreat into Cambridge.
As a testament to the pivotal battle, a granite obelisk was erected to commemorate the first Colonial action against the invading British forces upon Bunker Hill. The obelisk stands at 221-feet tall and contains 294 steps. If you climb those steps, you are awarded with stunning panoramic views of the harbor, Charlestown, and beyond. The Bunker Hill museum, monument, and other exhibitions are all free.
No trip to Boston is complete without learning more about the history and seeing facets of the American Revolution. Bunker Hill is the ideal destination for such an experience. With a mixture of educational institutions, restaurants, nightlife, and outdoor recreational spaces, Bunker Hill has a little something for everyone to enjoy.
Some points of interest that you cannot miss include:
Around Bunker Hill Monument, you can also see several older homes and buildings, some that have existed since the late 1700s. One of those is the aforementioned Warren Tavern, which served some of the Founding Fathers.
Green space is also replete in Bunker Hill and around Charlestown. Aside from the old Training Field, you can visit Paul Revere Park to the south, Boston National Historical Park, Barry Field, Thomas M. Menino Park, and the Phipps Street Burying Ground. Near Thomas M. Menino Park is also the Charlestown Marina, where you can see beautiful sights of the Boston skyline, ships, and more.
If you find yourself getting hungry, you won’t have to look far. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes and bars within and around Bunker Hill. The Brewer’s Fork is famous for its pizza; Monument Restaurant & Tavern is well-known for its homey dishes; Style Cafe has great views and sweet treats, and Pier 6 has incredible seafood.
How do you get to Bunker Hill and Charlestown? Depending on where you are headed from, you can walk, bike, ride the subway, or take the car. From the North End, you can cross the Charlestown Bridge on foot and see many great sights from there. You can also ride the MBTA Orange Line to Community College Station. The MBTA F4 Ferry also departs from Long Wharf and drops you off in Charlestown Navy Yard.
Perhaps you’re a busy Bunker Hill parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home.
