The City of Cambridge has come a long way from its origins as a small agricultural village. Today, Cambridge is a bright and bustling university town that is home to some of the best educational institutions in the country. But you don’t have to be a college student to enjoy everything that Cambridge has to offer.
You could stroll along the lively Charles River, visit historic sites, and take in all the beautiful 18th-century architecture that still stands today. Vibrant festivals, lively street parties, tranquil nature, and mouth-watering cuisine; Cambridge has it all!
Cambridge is a small city that makes up part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area. The city lies just north of the state capital across the Charles River. You can easily reach Cambridge from Boston airport, which is a short 15 minutes away by car or 20 minutes away by public transportation. Or, if you’re coming from Chicago or New York, you can take an Amtrak train and get there in just a few hours.
Just over 100,000 people live across the city’s 6.4-square miles of land. Its residents are sometimes called Cantabrigians, after the city’s Latin name Cantabrigia. A sizable chunk of the population are students who attend Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), or one of the city’s other notable educational institutions.
Cambridge is sometimes also called the ‘City of Squares’, named after the mini-neighborhoods that grew around major intersections. Here are some of the notable examples:
Cambridge is also split into different areas:
Adjacent to the historic city of Boston, Cambridge was one of the first English settlements in America. The original Massachusetts Puritan colonists founded Cambridge in 1630, then called Newe Towne and later Newtowne.
Chosen for its strategic location vis-a-vis the Boston Harbor, they set up the village center in what is Harvard Square today. At the time, Cambridge covered a much larger area, including areas now under Lexington, Newton, Arlington, and Brighton.
Cambridge was not a mere bystander during the American Revolution. George Washington gathered volunteer soldiers at Cambridge Common, a park near Harvard University. This moment in time is what many consider to be the birth of the American army.
After the revolution, the agricultural town developed into a bustling residential and commercial district, largely thanks to the new bridges and turnpikes that connected Cambridge to Boston and other surrounding towns. It was also a major cultural center as well, with the esteemed Fireside Poets calling Cambridge home.
From here, industry began to thrive in Cambridge. The Kennedy Biscuit Factory, the creator of the Fig Newton, was based in the city. And Fox Cross Company and James O. Welch (companies that would later be incorporated into Tootsie Roll Industries) also had HQs in Cambridge.
However, the Great Depression hit Cambridge hard, and the city shifted away from its industrial pursuits and started focusing on its cultural and intellectual contributions to the country.
Most people associate Cambridge with Harvard University, and that is because the history of Cambridge is so closely tied with the institution. Harvard was established in 1936 as Newe College, a full two years before the town was renamed to Cambridge.
In the early 20th century, many of the town’s major figures—the preachers, schoolmasters, and colony governor John Winthrop—had been graduates of the University of Cambridge in England, so it’s no surprise that they named their new settlement after their alma mater.
In addition to the prestige of Harvard, Radcliffe College, then the all-women counterpart to Harvard, encouraged some of the brightest female minds to flock to the city. Then, MIT moved from Boston to Cambridge, strengthening the city’s position as the intellectual capital of the United States.
Cambridge has been the site of many modern technological feats. In 1969, Bolt, Beranek, and Newman debuted the first network router in Cambridge Highlands. A couple of years later at the same company, Ray Tomlinson successfully invented computer-to-computer email. Another Cambridge-based company, VisiCorp, created the first ever spreadsheet software.
With access to some of the smartest people in the country via Harvard and MIT, tech startups were all over Cambridge. Polaroid, General Radio, and Lotus Development Corporation all set up shop in the area. The local council also set itself apart from its more hostile neighbors by approving and regulating DNA experiments within its borders encouraging the Genetics Institute to move its base to Cambridge.
Cambridge has maintained its reputation for excellence and innovation. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM all have offices or research centers in the city. And biotech and pharma companies have also followed suit, with Biogen, Genzyme, Pfizer, Sanofi, and GlaxoSmithKline all having major presences in Cambridge.
But at its heart, Cambridge is still a university town with Harvard and MIT employing over 15% of the population, and most of the local economy are associated with the universities.
If you spend most of your time hitting the books or working your 9-5, you might not have the time or energy to deep clean your apartment. And as one of the most expensive cities in the country, residential cleaning services aren’t always cheap.
So if you need seriously affordable Cambridge cleaning services, there’s always Patriot Maids. We are a top housekeeping & cleaning referral company that operates in the Greater Boston area. For first-class residential cleaning, contact Patriot Maids, the best in Cambridge home cleaning.
