South of historical districts since a smaller community within Dorchester known as Cedar Grove. A mixture of medical buildings, residential streets, and commercial buildings, Cedar Grove blends various facets of Dorchester’s distinctive community into its neighborhood. There is plenty to do, so if you are in Dorchester, be sure to plan a visit to Cedar Grove.
Here is everything you need to know to make your visit special:
With Dorchester arranged with various districts, some overlapping, and others more pronounced in history than others, it can be difficult to pick out Cedar Grove from the information. The defining feature of the area is the greenery, especially the area around Cedar Grove Cemetery and the Neponset River Reservation. There are few houses, and most of those homes are considered part of Adams Village or Ashmont or Milton, depending on where they are located. However, Cedar Grove has long been considered a neighborhood influenced by the Irish immigrants that settled there many years ago.
You can still see several Irish-owned businesses around the area, including the Irish bakeries and pubs closer to Adams Corner/Adams Village. Cedar Grove is also considered one of the safer regions of Dorchester because it has a high amount of UMass students and young professionals. It is joined on that list with Pope’s Hill, Lower Mills, Gallivan and Morrissey Boulevards, Ashmont Hill, and Saint Mark’s. Cedar Grove is also home to Carney Hospital and the sprawling Dorchester Park.
Dorchester has long been a patchwork of land that has gained and lost throughout the years. Prior to annexation in 1870, Dorchester ceded land to Quincy, and it later allowed for other portions, such as Milton, Hyde Park, and Stoughton to become separate towns. After annexation, Frederick Law Olmstead was hired to work on Dorchester Park in 1895.
One of the more pivotal landmarks of Cedar Grove Cemetery. The planning for a cemetery began in 1858 but didn’t succeed until 1867. The group chose a thirty-acre patch of green along the Neponset River and worked alongside the Legislature of Commonwealth of Massachusetts to ensure that the cemetery could be constructed there. The landscape and design were planned by Luther Briggs, Jr., a prominent name during that time.
Over the years, the cemetery has grown. In 1901, an office was constructed near the main gates. In 1917, a chapel was built using funds received from Dr. Eugene A. Gilman and Harriet D. Gilman. The chapel—named Gilman Chapel—was completed in the spring of 1931. Through the years many famous individuals had been interred at the cemetery, including Wilmon Blackmar and James W. Verney, both recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor; George Hibbard; a pallbearer for Abraham Lincoln, Senator John Conness; inventor of German Chocolate at Walter Baker, Samuel German; and Massachusetts State Senator Joseph Walsh.
Since 1904, the Dorchester Historical Society has been bringing a celebration known as Dorchester Day to the residents. It continues to be an annual event with community events, including the Landing Day Observance on the first Sunday of June. The Community Banquet is considered the grand finale.
Thinking about stopping by Cedar Grove today? You will have plenty to do in this quiet community and around it. There is expansive green space to explore, including the massive Dorchester Park, which has been open to the public since 1891. From there, you can wander the Cedar Grove Cemetery and check out the lovely chapel. The cemetery flows right into the Neponset River Reservation and the Neponset Trail from there can take you out towards the Pope John Paul II Park.
At the intersection of Dorchester Avenue and Adams Street, you can find a dozen places to grab something delicious. Though this area is considered Lower Mills, it is frequented by Cedar Grove residents. Up for something sugary? Try Sweet Life. But if you are craving something spicy, Yellow Door Taqueria cannot be missed.
You can reach Cedar Grove by taking the Mattapan Trolley to the Cedar Grove Station. Optionally, you can ride to Ashmont/Peabody Square Station on the MBTA Red Line and walk.
Perhaps you’re a busy Cedar Grove parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Cedar Grove don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family.
