CENTRAL SQUARE’S MOST TRUSTED HOUSE CLEANING REFERRAL AGENCY

East Boston has a lot of character, and every small district, such as Eagle Hill and Central Square, have their own flair. Central Square begins at the crossing of Meridian and Bennington Streets and runs up towards Sumner Tunnel. While the neighborhood may be a small section of houses and businesses, but it has a lot to see and do. Recently given a makeover by the city, Central Square is looking more lively than ever before.

The People and Places of Central Square

When you look at many neighborhood maps of East Boston, you will find that Central Square is usually noted as “Lower Eagle Hill/Central.” It is the location of many Latin/Hispanic immigrants. Because of the influences of immigrants throughout the years, the landscape of East Boston looks different from other places. For instance, East Boston has several community gardens.

Boston has a plethora of schools and education institutions, but Central Square has something special. The Mario Umana Middle School Academy is both the only school in Central Square but also the only recognized skate park as well. The Harborside Community Skatepark is housed on the school’s grounds. Across from the Umana School is the Nuestro Jardin (Our Garden), which was once reserved from the school’s children but is now open to the public.

Also, you can find the first public library branch in the whole nation—Boston Public Library—at 276 Meridian Street.

There are a couple of points of interest to be found in Central Square too. The first is tied into the culture of East Boston, the Italia Unita Festival. Every year, the festival kicks off in Central Square. There are live bands and food carts and other entertainments for people of all ages. Others include Liberty Plaza, a shopping district developed by the Lombardo family, and the Trinity Neighborhood House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The History of Central Square

Since Central Square is connected to East Boston, it has been influenced by East Boston’s growth. The area of East Boston was annexed in 1836. The East Boston that most are familiar today, however, did not exist until the 1940s. Multiple inner harbor islands were connected by landfill projects.

East Boston, as well as Central Square, has been called the Ellis Island of Boston. For many years, it has been a home to immigrants, especially those from Ireland, Russia, and Italy. Between 1920 and 1954, East Boston was where the immigration station was located. It is also very close to Logan International Airport, so those who visit Boston will most definitely see East Boston and Central Square as they venture deeper into the state’s capital.

In 2010, the redesign of East Boston’s Central Square commenced. It was a community design initiated by the Boston Transportation Department and was meant to bring more progress to the thriving commercial center of East Boston. The project was part of the East Boston Transportation Action Plan, confirmed in 2008. The design team was headed by Howard Stein Hudson and included the Klopfer Martin Design Group (KMDG), Toole Design Group, and Chan Krieger Sieniewicz.

The redesign added things like increased parking, better traffic flow, lighting, the Decaux wayfinding map, and the relocation of a veteran’s memorial in the area. In 2012, WiFi was added to Bertulli Park. In 2019, the Central Square redesign won a merit award from the Boston Society of Landscape Architects. You can read more about the redesign on the KMDG website

Central Square Today

Visiting Central Square is bound to be an experience. Though the neighborhood is not seen as a destination, it does have worthwhile attractions. It is a great place to walk around after exploring East Boston or while traveling up towards the Eagle Hill Historic District. The harbor offers excellent views of the city, and there are plenty of shopping opportunities, too. You can find several supermarkets, department stores, and even the East Boston Farmers’ Market in Central Square.

If you have kids who like skateboarding (or are a thrill seeker yourself), why not check out the skate park? Or you can walk around the parks and community gardens.

Since there are a lot of Hispanic/Latin immigrants in the area, you will also notice that there is a lot of Spanish restaurants in Central Square. This is a great time to get some authentic Mexican from Mi Pueblito or try the highly rated chicken from Pollo Campero.

While Central Square isn’t as talked about as some other destinations in Boston, it does have a charm that is worth visiting. Check it out!
