South Boston is an interesting place, being that it is home to many special attractions, such as Castle Island. With historical significance, popular real estate, beaches, and more, it is no wonder that you would be enticed into visiting. And when you do check out all that South Boston has to offer, you might find yourself in the neighborhood called City Point. The majority of City Point is residential and is connected to the downtown, but that doesn’t mean it is without things to discover!
City Point is a neighborhood in South Boston, right beside Telegraph Hill and Dorchester Heights and below the Conley Terminal. City Point also consists of Pleasure Beach, which is right below Castle Island as well as the entirety of East 3rd Street.
According to demographic data, around 10,500 people are dwelling in the neighborhood of City Point, and about 95 percent are Caucasian. The median age is around 30-35. The people who live in City Point are primarily urban sophisticates who are wealthy and enjoy the arts. Median household income is around $115,500. The typical commute time of residents is between 10 to 30 minutes, suggesting that many of them are living and working within South Boston—probably Seaport—or the Financial District.
Of the 10,500 residents, around 48 percent have Irish ancestry. Another 3.5 percent have Portuguese ancestry.
Since City Point is part of South Boston, much of its history is connected to the development of the southern edge of the city. It was not until the early 21st century when City Point started to gain attention, however. During this time, the property value of the land soared. In fact, for a short while, City Point was one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the whole of Boston. Because of this popularity, City Point became the focus of realtors who dubbed it the “East Side” of South Boston, and gentrification quickly followed.
Pleasure Bay is one of the defining features of the neighborhood and is one of the creations of Frederick Law Olmstead. In 1897, he suggested a plan for a continuous traffic route that extended from Franklin Park to Marine Park. Thus, construction began. The result was a wonder of modern engineering: a promenade, a tide basin, a beach, and all within the sight of the massive Conley Terminal shipping facility.
Olmstead was the one who shaped the bay—literally. He envisioned the circular bay with its paths and bridges and boardwalks. Today, the walk around Pleasure Bay takes about an hour to complete. From the causeway, you can see the Boston Skyline, Fort Independence, and much more.
There are several places that you can explore in City Point, especially if you plan on spending a day touring South Boston. City Point encompasses a long stretch of land, after all. You will find yourself wandering the streets in no time. Some points of interest include Pleasure Bay and M Street Beach. There are several routes along Pleasure Bay, including a trail leading to Head Island. You can even connect to the HarborWalk.
Pleasure Bay is the number one stop in City Point. It’s the place to be seen and to hang out when the temperature spikes in the summertime. Whether you walk the whole causeway or lounge on the sandy beach, you and everyone else tagging along will have a grand time. You can also visit the beautiful M Street and L Street Beaches and snap pictures of the marina, where dozens of yachts are parked.
There is also the small Medal of Honor Park. The pathways are laid out in the shape of a star and have plaques honoring those who served in the Vietnam War. North of the memorial is Christopher Lee Playground—the perfect place for the little ones to blow off steam.
If you get hungry while visiting Castle Park, Pleasure Bay, or one of the other beaches, you don’t have to worry. Aside from the ice cream vendors at the beach, there are a couple of great restaurants in City Point. The first is farther from the water, but it is worthwhile. Known as Publico Street Bistro & Garden, this creative bar has Latin dishes and beautiful alfresco seating. There is also Sidewalk Cafe South Boston near the M Street memorial park, the highly-rated Local 149, and the L Street Tavern.
Walking around City Point is an amazing experience, and you are sure to enjoy every moment. Be sure to dip your feet in the cool waters of Boston Bay, and don’t forget a camera. You’re going to need it for those views of the skyline!
Perhaps you’re a busy City Point parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in City Point don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task. You can arrive at home knowing that your house has been cleaned by a qualified team of professionals and will shine from top to bottom.
