Cleary Square of Hyde Park is a place with urban and industrial vibes with a sprinkle of history. A mishmash community, a single walk down the streets will give you an insight into the people. With all the ethnic stores, fast food restaurants, ramshackle storefronts, and historical buildings, it is a blend of Boston with influences from its large Haitian and Latino populations. Not only is Cleary Square a fascinating place, but it is also a great addition to any traveler’s itinerary. If you are looking to see a little more of what Boston has to offer, head to Hyde Park and Cleary Square.
Here is everything you need to know to make your trip awesome:
When you look on a map, you will notice that Hyde Park is often a division of Logan Square, Cleary Square, and Stony Brook areas. Technically, Cleary Square is not a green square but one created by the triangle of River Street’s division into Fairmount Avenue. The commercial area surrounding River Street and Fairmount Avenue is where most of the action within Hyde Park happen.
During the first 100 years after Hyde Park was founded, the largest group were Europeans—mainly Irish, Italian, and Polish. But as Boston grew and more people arrived in the United States, that started to shift. A significant number of residents in Hyde Park are foreign-born, and there are distinct ethnic groupings throughout the neighborhood. Now, many Haitians, Latinos, and Hispanics live in the area surrounding Cleary Square and Logan Square.
The commercial district between Logan Square and Cleary Square is also a place to see historical architecture. For instance, the municipal building was constructed after the annexation of Hyde Park in 1912. The YMCA branch was constructed in 1902, although the facility was renovated in 2010. Another building, the Roman Catholic Most Precious Blood Church, was built in 1885 and utilizes English Gothic features, though the spire was removed in 1954. The Riverside Theatre Works was built in 1897 by Leroy J. French. These structures are completed by the neighboring Fairmount Hill area, which has a plethora of houses from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Since Cleary Square is considered to be the center of Hyde Park alongside Logan Square, the history these places share is mostly the same. Henry Grew, a business from Boston, moved out to Hyde Park in 1845. He was delighted by the view of the Blue Hills and purchased hundreds of acres to enjoy that view even more thoroughly. Some of this area has been preserved by the George Wright Golf Course and Stony Brook Reservation. Afterward, the Hyde Park Land Company bought a tract of land to construct the Boston and Providence Railroad.
That said, neither Grew nor the Hyde Park Land Company is thought to be the founders. That title belongs to Alpheus Perley Blake, who organized the Fairmount Land Company and the Twenty Associates group in 1856. This large group of businessmen and develops are responsible for much expansion southward from Boston.
Hyde Park was the last town to merge with Boston. Because of this, Hyde Park had developed its own microcosm of the city, complete with a central business district between Logan and Cleary Squares. The small-town feeling of the commercial area is unique for the mixture of civic buildings alongside residences and businesses, theaters, and places of worship. Although the business district has been remodeled and revitalized throughout the years, it retains this unique structure.
A trip to Cleary Square is bound to be a highlight of your trip. Whether you are headed out to Hyde Park to see some of the historical buildings around Fairmount Hill or you want to play golf or go hiking, there is so much to do. Thought the George Wright golf course is not technically a part of the Cleary Square area, it is a highlight and a lovely place for putting around. The Stony Brook Park is where you go to refresh and relax out in some untouched greenery for a while.
After that, you can return back to civilization and support one or a handful of the small local businesses lining the streets between Cleary Square and Logan Square. There are several amazing restaurants, including Little Haiti International Cuisine, River Grille Restaurant & Cafe, Essence of Thyme Cafe and Gift Shop, ZAZ, Papa Gino’s, and many more. You should also enjoy a show or two at the Riverside Theatre Works or check out what is happening at the Hyde Park Art Association, YMCA, or the Hyde Park Community Center.
To get to Cleary Square, you will need to use the MBTA Commuter Lines. The Franklin Line and Providence/Stoughton Line stop at the Hyde Park Station. Meanwhile, the Fairmount Line and Franklin Line stops at the nearby Fairmount Station. Bus Line 33 also stops at River Street/Central Avenue, right at the center of the commercial district.
