Not be confused for just a single station of the C Branch of the MBTA Green Line, Cleveland Circle is an interesting destination for anyone who seeks a lively place for nightlife, shopping, and green space. As a piece of Brighton’s Aberdeen neighborhood, Cleveland Circle might not be that large, but it does have character. If you are looking for a destination that is off the beaten path while visiting Boston, then consider Cleveland Circle.
Here is everything you need to know about this commercial district in Brighton:
Cleveland Circle is a part of the Brighton neighborhood, on the end of Aberdeen, and borders on Chestnut Hill and Brookline at the intersection of Chestnut Hill Avenue and Beacon Street. Although Cleveland Circle is considered a business center of Aberdeen, it also has residential sections with apartment buildings, single-family homes, and student rentals. That said, the population is largely made up of young professionals and middle-aged families. Many of the college students living in Cleveland Circle are from Newbury College and Boston College.
Cleveland Circle is also known for being a streetcar suburb in the past. These days, it is the terminus of the C Branch.
Apart from the Cleveland Circle neighborhood, which has several historic storefronts, several buildings around Aberdeen have unique architectural styles. The nearby Chestnut Hill Historic District and the Chestnut Hill Reservation are also remnants of the growth of Cleveland Circle and have been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Before Aberdeen developing into a suburban community, there was planning. In 1845, Chestnut Hill Avenue was laid down, and Beacon Street followed in 1850. Then, due to the opening of the Charles River Branch Railroad in November 1852, Reservoir Station opened, prompting more people to move out towards Brighton and what later became Cleveland Circle.
Aberdeen and Cleveland Circle truly emerged around 1887. Before that, there were more agricultural lots and slaughterhouses than anything else. The new West End Street Railway segment that opened in 1887 allowed for families to commute from Cleveland Circle and into Boston.
You might notice that a lot of the streets around Aberdeen and Cleveland Circle have Anglo-Saxon and Scottish roots. This is because in the 1890s, when many of the streets were planned or laid out, the British Empire still had a lot of influence over America, and the novelist Sir Walter Scott was immensely popular. Thus, with Aberdeen being named after the Scottish city of the same name, it seemed to make sense to carry on with the theme. It was thought that the Anglo-Scottish names added a sense of prestige to the neighborhood; and it did, especially since the town had a unique topography and many stylistic buildings.
If you are planning on riding out to Cleveland Circle today, you will find a mix of residential buildings and a thrumming business center with delicatessens, pizza parlors, and a sprawling park. There are historical buildings to see in both the Aberdeen section of Brighton and Chestnut Hill that make for elegant photo backgrounds.
Most locals head to Cleveland Circle for the food, since there are several great spots to sit down with friends and family or for takeout. With the park nearby, you can easily hop on a train, ride to Cleveland Circle, grab a sandwich or pizza pie, and go for a picnic in the park. Some of the recommended spots include Kung Fu Tea, a bubble tea shop; Eagle’s Deli, where you can get way more than sandwiches; Amelia’s Taqueria; and the Circle Tavern.
If you are up for some exercise, you can walk towards Washington Square Station, where there are even more choices for food. Farther south, past Reservoir Station, is the Fisher Hill Historic District. To the west is the Chestnut Hill Reservation, which has over a mile or so of trails, and Boston College’s campus is on the other side of that. You can even get to the McMullen Museum of Art on foot.
Getting to Cleveland Circle is easy because there are several stations within the area. Cleveland Circle has its own station of the Green Line C Branch. Reservoir Station is to the south and on the MBTA Green Line D Branch. On the B Branch is Chestnut Hill Avenue Station to the north.
Perhaps you’re a busy Cleveland Circle parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home.
