There are many diverse places within Boston and the Greater Boston area, including Dorchester. Within Dorchester, there is a historic district known as Codman Square, where many people with Caribbean ancestry live. The area is both residential and commercial, and it has preserved historical buildings with fascinating architecture. The community is engaged in eco-friendly living, along with promoting greener spaces.
If you plan on visiting Dorchester, you should see what Codman Square is offering up. Here is everything you need to know:
Codman Square consists of 13 blocks that have long been a historic center for the Boston neighborhood, Dorchester. The area has been a major civic center through the years, and it includes several historically significant schools, churches, and public facilities. Some date back to the 19th century, with the earliest building dating back to 1806.
The area of Codman Square has around 1,500 buildings and over 500 residential units. Recently, as part of a redevelopment initiative, a firehouse from 1869 was reimagined as Torrent Engine 18, art and performance space. Past performances included The Dresden Dolls, Amanda Palmer, and Neil Gaiman.
Since Codman Square runs along the road containing Dorchester Center, you can see a lot of residential and commercial buildings all in one place. There are smaller apartment complexes beside three-deckers and duplexes.
Codman Square and other regions of Dorchester are known for being diverse. The western side of Dorchester has a large Caribbean population. Many residents have Sub-Saharan African, Dominican, and Haitian ancestry. About 9 percent of residents are also Puerto Rican. Many were born outside of the country.
The Codman Square District is considered part of Dorchester and has four prominent properties making up the main intersection, for which the district was named. The roads include Talbot Avenue and Washington Street. The historic properties include the Second Church of Dorchester (originally named the Congregational Church) from 1806, the Boston Public Library branch (constructed in 1904), the Lithgow Building from 1899, and the former Girls Latin Academy.
Codman Square was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
Now, a little about Dorchester, since the history of how the area grew and flourished can say a lot about Codman Square. Dorchester was settled separately from Boston by Puritans who had emigrated from England in 1630. Until 1870, Dorchester was rural and had a small population of around 12,000 people. However, once streetcars were introduced to Boston, the population ballooned to 150,000 in 1920. In 2010, the population had dropped to 92,115, and it has remained around that amount to the present.
One of the major projects happening in Boston even today is known as EcoDistricts. It includes the TNT Eco-Innovation District, which also includes Codman Square. For this reason, the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation—founded over 35 years ago—has been working diligently to ensure that the area thrives. In 2009, the community started a large area-wide planning process dubbed Millennium 10. It was meant to provide work to over 1,000 residents and to create equality and equity within Talbot Norfolk Triangle. Today, the community is committed to using LEED tools for further construction.
Aside from visiting the historic buildings that are located around Codman Square, there are plenty of things to do today. Head down Washington Street to visit Dorchester Center, where you can find many food shops covering a vast array of flavors, along with schools and churches. To the north of Codman Square are rows of houses and small playgrounds. You can also visit the numerous community gardens in the area. Children will love Roberts Playground and Elmhurst Park.
Planning on taking public transit to Codman Square? Hop aboard the Commuter Rail to the Talbot Avenue station. Everything is within walking distance from there.
Perhaps you’re a busy Codman Square parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
