Visiting Boston is sure to be a memorable occasion that you, your friends, and family will recall for many years. There are dozens of fascinating sights to see and places to visit through the downtown area. One of those happens to be Copley Square, where history, architecture, and nature come together. Not only is the square a true square in the middle of four roads, but it is also surrounded by some of the most popular attractions in Boston.

In other words, when in Boston, a trip to Copley Square is in order. Here is everything you need to know about Copley Square:

The People and Places of Copley Square

Copley Square was named after an American portraitist, John Singleton Copley, and has become a focal point of a commercial district in the middle of Back Bay, Boston. Boylston Street is nearby, offering up shopping and other entertainments, while Newbury Street attracts those searching for designer goods and restaurants. All around, you can spot preserved townhouses from the 19th century.

Who was John Singleton Copley and why was the square named after him? As an Anglo-American painter, John Singleton Copley rendered portraits of many famous individuals throughout history. It is thought he was born in America, but he moved to London in 1774 and never returned. However, his portraits gave him considerable success. Some of his famous renderings include Paul Revere (1768), Dorothy Quincy Hancock (1772), The Death of the Earl of Chatham (1779-81), The Death of Major Peirson (1783), and many others.

The History of Copley Square

During the 19th century, Back Bay was at the epicenter of Boston’s growth. It was the aim of all those who lived in Boston to make it the heart of culture and innovation in the nation, and so dozens of important cultural and educational institutions were constructed around Copley Square. These included the original campus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard Medical School, the Museum of Fine Arts, the New England Museum of Natural History (now known as the Museum of Science), the New Old South Church, Trinity Church, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Boston Public Library, Massachusetts College of Art and Design (originally named the Normal Art School), Boston University, Northeastern University, and Emerson College.

Until 1883, Copley Square was named Art Square. At that time, the square was cut diagonally across by Huntington Avenue. In 1961, Huntington Avenue was halved at Dartmouth Street. The Square was paved in the center, and a fountain was added. Further changes were completed in 1991, and Copley Square Park was opened. A nonprofit organization, the Friends of Copley Square, continues to raise money to care for the monuments, sculptures, fountains, and paintings.

Since 1986, the Boston Marathon finishes within Copley Square. On a darker note, Copley Square was where the Boston Marathon bombing occurred. On April 15, 2013, there were two explosions, one near the Boston Public Library and another on another block seconds after. Three people died and another 183 people were injured. The Boston Marathon is an ongoing event, but no one has forgotten that fateful day.

Copley Square Today

If you are in Back Bay today, then you also need to check out Copley Square. Not only is the park itself a lovely place full of nature, but the surrounding architecture is bound to make it a special day. There are several key landmarks within and around the square, including the following:

  • Old South Church – features Venetian Gothic Revival elements
  • Trinity Church – one of the most famous landmarks in all of Boston
  • Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel – done in the Beaux-Arts style; the original location of the Museum of Fine Arts
  • Boston Public Library
  • John Hancock Tower
  • BosTix Kiosk

You should also see the bronze statue of John Singleton Copley standing in the park, as well as the lovely fountain. Things to take pictures of including the Tortoise and Hare sculpture, the Art Benches, the Khalil Gabran plaque, and scenes from the Copley Square Farmer’s Market.

Did you work up an appetite wandering around Copley Square? You certainly won’t go hungry. Head down Dartmouth Street or Boylston Street to find dozens of restaurants. Some favorites include Lolita Back Bay, Sorellina, Luke’s Lobster Back Bay, Saltie Girl, and Buttermilk & Bourbon.

Looking to reach Copley Square from anywhere in Boston and beyond? There are several ways to get there. You can disembark from Copley Station from the MBTA Green Line, take an MBTA bus, the Logan Express to and from Logan International Airport, or a number of nearby stations (MBTA Orange Line’s Back Bay Station or MBTA Commuter Rail).
