The History of Dedham

Dedham is a place of fascinating history, full of rich and intriguing details. The town was first settled in 1635 upon the General Court ruling for the establishment of two towns to relieve the cramped conditions of other settlements. Dedham was soon incorporated in 1636.

The town constructed its first mill in 1642, giving the townspeople a place to grind their corn and other grains down using power from the Charles River. Over the next 100 years, more mills popped up in Dedham, including ones for processing leather and paper. Then, as industrialization continued, more complex mills were developed for cotton, nails, wire, wool, textiles, and even stamping coins.

These successful industries beckoned families from other areas to flood to Dedham. This sparked the development of churches, stores, housing, and other things that residents demanded.

In 1793, Dedham became the county seat for Norfolk County. The next 200 years saw incredible prosperity through the town. Dedham has three districts that are now recognized for historical and agricultural significance in American History: the Franklin Square-Court Street District (also called Dedham Village Historic District), the Connecticut Corner District, and the Federal Hill District.
