Dewey Square is a popular place in Boston, despite its tiny size. Surrounded by high-rise buildings and fast-paced highways, Dewey Square is at the heart of everything Boston-related. It has a lengthy history, too, making it an excellent place to gather with friends, go on a walking tour, shop for some fresh produce, or take Boston’s unique ambiance. No trip to Boston is complete without a visit to Dewey Square, so here is everything you need to know to get the most out of it.
Dewey Square is located in Boston’s downtown and is found at the intersection of Summer Street, Atlantic Avenue, Purchase Street, Federal Street, and the John F. Kennedy Surface Road. The Central Artery (I-93) passes underneath Dewey Square, through the Big Dig and Dewey Square Tunnel. At the southeast corner of Dewey Square is the primary transportation hub, South Station.
The facade of South Station is one of the reasons why people flock to Dewey Square, but there is more to do than just viewing landmarks. Dewey Square happens to be one of the most programmed areas of the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Throughout the year, you can find free films, farmers’ markets, exhibits, and festivals. Dewey Square also has some stunning architecture, including the louvered head houses that lead to the underground subway. The glass head houses are aglow in the evening, guiding people to their destination.
Dewey Square was named after Admiral George Dewey, who had won during the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898. Before the demolition of Boston’s Central Artery in the 1950s, Dewey Square was nothing more than an intersection from a cluster of roads all converging on the same spot. The crossing was rimmed with buildings and had no additional space.
In 1898, the extension of Summer Street made it a local road, and by 1899, the street crossed the Fort Point Channel via the Summer Street Bridge. That same year, Federal Street was closed to construct the new South Station. Atlantic Avenue was lengthened, and the Boston Elevated Railway was reorganized so that the streetcar tracks could intersect between Summer Street and Atlantic Avenue. In 1901, the Atlantic Avenue Elevated was introduced one block from Dewey Square. However, that station closed in 1938 then was torn down two years later.
Dewey Square’s next significant change happened during the construction of the Central Artery. North and south of the square, things were razed down. The Artery was constructed underground using the Dewey Square Tunnel. Atlantic Avenue transitioned into a one-way street. Purchase Street as well. This brought about the Surface Artery, which was a two-way road running southwest from Dewey Square.
Throughout the years, the streets have changed, but Dewey Square has remained, sometimes expanding or receding, depending on what was needed at the time.
Between September 30 and December 10, 2011, Dewey Square was the site of the tent city called Occupy Boston. It was related to the Occupy Wall Street Movement that occurred in New York City. The demonstrators of Occupy Boston pitched tents throughout Dewey Square, nearly 90 shelters as of October 15. The protesters even brought in a tent library. On December 7, 2011, a Boston judge allowed for the Boston Mayor Thomas Menino to forcibly remove the protesters. On December 10, the Boston police raided the tent city, arresting 46 people.
The urban plaza known as Dewey Square is as lively today as it has ever been. There is a continuous flow of events that happen here to keep you entertained. Dewey Square is home to an outdoor farmers market where fresh produce and other items are available. You can find a large assortment of goods, including baked goods, bread, cheese, meat, flowers, and much more accessible. Dewey Square and other parts of the Rose Kennedy Greenway also attract a large number of food trucks throughout the year, so you should definitely check it out if you love tasting the latest food trends.
Dewey Square is also located near several amazing Boston attractions, making it a convenient gathering point. To the east, you can find the Atlantic Wharf, sections of the Boston Harborwalk, the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, and the Seaport District across the Summer Street Bridge. If you head westward, you can visit the Leather District, Chinatown, and the Theatre District. North of Dewey Square is the famous Financial District.
With its central location and proximity to South Station, a stop by Dewey Square is easy. What are you waiting for? Come see what the square is offering up today!
