South Boston is a community that boasts numerous attractions, both historical and new. One such place is Dorchester Heights, a prominent location within the neighborhood of Telegraph Hill. The spot is a favorite place to see the Boston skyline and Boston Harbor, as well as fireworks and greenery. With its central location, Dorchester Heights is a spot that provides nearby residents and visitors quick access to major highways, shorelines, restaurants, and shopping. Whether you are planning a trip to Castle Island or Pleasure Bay or are walking around the Harborwalk, a quick stop in Dorchester Heights can make your trip that much more special.
The neighborhood of Dorchester Heights encompasses the entirety of Thomas Park, where you find the memorial tower, as well as part of East Broadway Street, Old Harbor Street, a piece of Columbia Road, and William J. Day Boulevard, and part of K and H Streets to the east. Much of the buildings throughout the neighborhood are rental houses or small apartment buildings with 2, 3, or 4 units. The area is also densely populated. However, with a high walkability score and conveniences like parks and nearby restaurants, the area seems almost suburban in character.
Many of the people who live in Dorchester Heights are wealthy and work in management or executive positions in a number of industries. With the total population of South Boston being around 33,500 people, it is safe to say a large portion dwells in and around Dorchester Heights. Irish-Americans are a prominent group around Dorchester Heights, while others have German and Italian roots.
Thomas Park and Dorchester Heights were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 by the Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service.
Originally part of the Dorchester Peninsula that was later connected to South End by landfill projects and bridges, the area of Dorchester Heights is known mainly for an action during the American Revolution called the Fortification of Dorchester Heights. Once the battles of Lexington and Concord had been fought, New England was ablaze with the revolutionary mindset, and militiamen from across the colonies arrived in Boston to help fortify the city and reclaim it from the British forces.
In November 1775, Henry Knox was sent to Fort Ticonderoga in New York to retrieve cannons. From there the militia marched back. Along the way, they came up with a plan to deaden the sound of the wheels by wrapping them in the hay, and, on March 4, 1776, in the middle of the night, the militia and other volunteers worked to entrench themselves atop Dorchester Heights.
The British planned to launch a counterattack from the Harbor, but terrible weather forced them to rethink their actions. Because of the defensible position atop the hill and the bad weather, the British Royal Navy took the British forces and Loyalists within Boston on March 17, 1776, away. This is now known as Evacuation Day in Massachusetts.
If you plan on visiting Dorchester Heights today, then you are in for a memorable experience. There are plenty of places to discover nearby, as well as a lot of walkable streets and sights to behold. Being that the neighborhood of Dorchester Heights is quiet compared to other areas of Boston’s southern areas, you can enjoy the tranquility before endeavoring to reach more popular attractions, like Castle Island and Pleasure Bay, which are a short distance away.
Within the immediate area of Dorchester Heights, you have Thomas Park and the Dorchester Heights monument. The towering monument stands at 115-feet tall and uses Georgia architecture, including a cupola. It is a picturesque location that is also an excellent spot to view Independence Day fireworks. You don’t want to miss them if you are in Dorchester Heights on July 4th.
Although West Broadway Street is not part of Dorchester Heights, it is within walking distance from the monument. Along the street, you will find several great restaurants and cafes. The Lincoln Tavern & Restaurant is a favorite among the locals and visitors for its elegant setting and comfort food. Caffe Nero is the perfect place to sip iced coffee with friends. Sweet Tooth Boston has dozens of treats to sample, and the Stats Bar & Grille is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner.
To the south of the monument is an expansive beach, the Harborwalk, and Joe Moakley Park. Carson Beach is the ideal place to unroll and blanket and just soak up the sun. You can also go in the opposite direction to hit the L Street Beach.
Dorchester Heights might not have the number of attractions that other sections of Boston have, but it does have a history, amazing views, and beaches close by. Check it out. You won’t regret it!
