The area known as East Berkeley Street Neighborhood is a relatively new community despite the streets have been around for hundreds of years. As a result of urban renewal and the dynamic changes of the city, East Berkeley Street has become a center of housing and retail, as well as home to a diverse group of residents from across the globe. With East Berkeley Street being so close to some of the most popular attractions in Boston, it is one street worth working along and experiencing.

The People and Places of East Berkeley

East Berkeley is less of a neighborhood and more of a dividing line between specific areas within the South End. It is a long street that starts off of Berkeley Street when it intersects with Tremont Street. From there, East Berkeley runs past I-93 and Route 1, where it becomes West Fourth Street. South End has several sub-districts of which East Berkeley Street plays a major role in dividing those sections up. South of Washington (SoWA) is the area between Albany to Washington Street and East Berkeley Street to Massachusetts Avenue. Then there are the New York Streets, the Back Streets, and the Medical Area.

However, even with all these subdivisions of South End, East Berkeley Street is noted for having its own character and neighborhood that has been around even since East Berkeley was known as Dover Street. That is because South End has one of the most varied populations in all of Boston, and it has been that way for many years. There are people from all around the globe who have settled in South End and around East Berkeley, including those from Europe, Asia, Africa, Central, and South America. While the primary spoken language is English, a large portion of the neighborhood’s population speaks a second or third language. Over half of the South End population works within the STEM or management fields.

The History of East Berkeley

East Berkeley Street was once known as Dover Street and has played a role in American history more than once. Washington Street, which is near Dover Street, was built upon a narrow peninsula that connected to the mainland. These two roads formed the thoroughfare that helped those on the peninsula get to the rest of the colony. Because Dover Street and Washington Street were beyond the majority of the town, the land was considered unwanted.

Throughout the 18th century, most of the businesses along Dover Street were breweries and brickworks and maritime businesses. Then, in the early 1800s, investors started buying land throughout South Boston’s Dorchester Heights. A 1200 foot long bridge was constructed on Dover Street and allowed for ships to pass along Harrison Avenue (then known as Albany Street) before more the land was filled in.

By the mid-nineteenth century, the area was highly industrialized. There were Irish immigrants, piano factories, and tenement buildings all over the place. Around 1900, social workers arrived on the scene to discuss the poor conditions of the tenement buildings that housed Jewish, Irish, and Italian immigrants alongside Blacks. The water was supposedly so cold no one could shower. This was the start of Dover Street’s low-income neighborhood. However, this continued on for many years.

In the 1930s, Boston city officials started to discuss the possibility of urban renewal for Dover Street, but it took another twenty years before anything began. Yet, instead of making housing, the city opted to make the neighborhood more industrial, and the residents were thrown into mass confusion, for no one had warned them when the urban renewal would begin. It was Boston’s first urban renewal project, and was, ultimately, a massive failure.

As gentrification moved from Back Bay into South End during the 1950s, another attempt at renewal began. Dover Street was renamed East Berkeley Street, and infrastructure was gradually rebuilt, bringing together more housing. It wasn’t until 2010, though, that the East Berkeley neighborhood you see today was formed.

East Berkeley Today

Although East Berkeley Street has been around for many years, a lot of what visitors to Boston see today is brand new. East Berkeley is an enduring neighborhood made even more colorful and varied by the new businesses that seem to be popping up every single day. With a location central to the Theater District, Chinatown, Dorchester Heights and Telegraph Hill, Back Bay, and more, East Berkeley Street is one road worth exploring.

If you go today, you will find Berkeley Community Garden, Castle Square Parks, and Peter’s Park adding to the calm surroundings. There are several restaurants, cafes, and bars around, so come hungry and ready to dine al fresco—weather permitting. Blackbird Doughnuts is a must for a morning snack, while Coppa Enoteca, an Italian restaurant, is suited for a light lunch. In the evening, why not head to Cathedral Station, Barcelona Wine Bar, or Bar Mezzana for a drink or two? Of course, there are plenty of other options to consider.

East Berkeley Street is also the main road taking you towards the SoWa Open Market, a gathering of local artists, and the International Poster Gallery. There is also the SoWa Power Station nearby if you are in the mood for seeing live music.

While East Berkeley Street may just be another facet of South End, it has its own unique history and community, some come check it out!
