Nicknamed Eastie, East Boston is a neighborhood in Boston that has been part of the city since 1836. The influences of immigrants from around the world have shaped the neighborhood, making it as dynamic, diverse, and energetic as the downtown. Known for piers, parks, and other stunning attractions, East Boston has quickly become a place that locals and visitors alike visit regularly.
East Boston has always been a place that is rich in culture and diverse. An immigrant population has been the core of Eastie since the 1900s, and even today there are thousands of people from across the globe who call East Boston their home. As of 2011, there were around 41,000 people in East Boston. It can be estimated that the number has grown slightly throughout the years. Although there is a large number of Italian Americans, the largest language groups are Hispanics and Latinos who speak either Portuguese or Spanish.
Because of the growth and spread of people, East Boston is full of historical attractions. In Orient Heights, there is the Madonna Queen of the Universe Shrine. There is also the Temple Ohabei Shalom Cemetery, the first Jewish cemetery in Massachusetts. There are branches of the public library, parks, and much more.
East Boston was once five separate islands: Noddle’s, Governor’s, Bird, Apple, and Hog’s. The islands had separate purposes, and people would get to the mainland of Boston by ferry. Eventually, once connections to the city were set up, East Boston started to separate into smaller neighborhoods. A steam railroad made commuting easier, and industries started to populate the skyline.
For instance, in the mid-1830s, the East Boston Company had ferries running to and from Boston to send goods to East Boston Lumber Company and the Boston Sugar Refinery. Those businesses stayed in business for a long while, but time-shifted the face of the area.
By the middle of the 19th century, the community of East Boston was one of the immigrants. Irish and Canadians arrived first, followed by Jews from Russia, Italians, and even Asians. Later on, in the 20th and 21st centuries, Central and South American immigrants started to arrive en masse. Today, the area is largely populated by Italian Americans.
East Boston is a vibrant place with some of the most beautiful waterfront sights in the entire city.
Eat as you live in Eastie! Visit the various restaurants and eateries throughout the neighborhood, including the ReelHouse near the famous LoPresti Park. The ReelHouse is all about seafood, coastal décor, and comfort. You can also try D’Parma Italian Cuisine to honor the high population of Italian Americans dwelling in the area or head to Cunard Tavern for some good ol’ American fare. Up for some Salvadorian or Mexican? Head to either El Jardin on Sumner Street or Taco Mex off of Scarmella/Maverick Square.
You can also enjoy a bunch of local shopping at one of the many markets, like Bella’s Market or check out the La Tia Artisan Glass Gallery for souvenirs. If you want more high-end goods, don’t pass up a chance to check out the Lewis Mall Harbor Park.
Looking for something to do outdoors? There is LoPresti Park, Carlton’s Wharf, Decatur and Meridian Streets Park, and Lombardi Memorial Park, among other patches of green throughout East Boston to check out. Farther north is Belle Isle Marsh Reservation, as well.
Since East Boston is close to Boston Logan International Airport, it is the perfect place to hang out before a flight or if you have a stopover. Even if you are in Boston for a weekend or live here, Eastie is sure to be full of surprises!
Perhaps you’re a busy East Boston parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
