Cambridge is one of the many places that people choose to visit when they come to Massachusetts. Not only is it close to Boston, but it has several fascinating neighborhoods and a long history. One of the older sections of Cambridge is East Cambridge, where you can find several commercial zones lined with old buildings. With MIT to the south and the Charles River as well, you can also enjoy green space.
If you are planning on visiting East Cambridge, here is some information to ensure you have an amazing and memorable time:
East Cambridge has a different feel to it from the rest of Cambridge and Boston. The streets of East Cambridge have long been occupied by Irish and Portuguese immigrants, as well as Italians and Polish, and young professionals who work around Kendall Square and Boston. East Cambridge has been a middle-class neighborhood for many years, and that does not seem to be changing. Currently, East Cambridge has a population between 7,000 and 7,500 residents and an estimated 3,000 households. Since 2005, there have been tracts of land purchased to bring modernization to the area.
East Cambridge is bordered by Somerville, the Charles River, Kendall Square, and the Boston & Albany Railroad. At the center of the neighborhood is one of the oldest parts of Cambridge, including Lechmere Square. You can also find the Middlesex County District Court at Lechmere Square. To the south of East Cambridge, you find an area that has been converted from industrial to offices, apartment buildings, and facilities for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Once, East Cambridge was an island during high tide. The Miller’s River, which was once called Willis Creek, created a shoreline called Lechmere’s Point during the time of the Revolution. It was the landing point for British troops that were headed to the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Later, investors constructed Craigie’s Bridge to connect the island to Boston.
The creation of the Middlesex Turnpike and Boston & Lowell Railroad helped prompt growth within the area. This was followed by the introduction of the Fitchburg Railroad (1843) and the Grand Junction Railroad (later named the Boston & Albany Railroad) of 1847. Landfill projects back to expand the original street grid, bringing East Cambridge to its near modern layout by the 1920s. The Miller’s River was filled in to make this possible.
Since the 1990s, East Cambridge and Lechmere Square were slowly gentrified, and the process is ongoing. The neighborhood has seen large developments, including the residential towers at North Point. In 2011, Kendall Square saw rapid growth with new restaurants and businesses.
Today, East Cambridge is an amazing addition to any travel itinerary. It has everything you could want for a day trip or two. With Kendall Square as part of East Cambridge, you can expect great views, restaurants, nightlife, and also innovation. Whatever you are looking for, East Cambridge has it. You can begin a journey to East Cambridge today by heading to the gorgeous Lechmere Canal Park and the Museum of Science. From there, you can follow the Cambridge Parkway towards the Broad Canal and Kendall Square.
If you are feeling adventurous, you can take a canoe or kayak out by Longfellow Bridge at Charles River Canoe and Kayak. Or, if you are more for shopping, why not head to CambridgeSide shopping mall?
Once you start getting peckish, you can try the famous ice cream from Toscanini’s. There is also Tatte Bakery & Cafe or ArtScience Culture Lab & Cafe. Each place is unique and has a different ambiance, but they also separately capture the innovation of Kendall Square and the tradition of East Cambridge.
Getting to East Cambridge is easy. You can take a car across the Longfellow Bridge, walk, or bike. You can also ride the MBTA subway to either Lechmere Station (B, C, E branches of Green Line) or Kendall/MIT Station (Red Line).
