Milton is a town on the outskirts of Boston with three distinct areas. East Milton is one of the most populated cities and is also at the center of green spaces, historical lands, and a highway. With a convenient location to a dozen other fascinating destinations, East Milton might be the perfect pit stop or one-day getaway. If you are looking for someplace quiet but with several attractions close by to keep busy, consider visiting East Milton.

Here is everything you need to know:

The People and Places of East Milton

East Milton is at a unique position on the map. Wollaston and Quincy border the community to the east, Milton Hill and the Neponset River to the north, West Quincy to the south, and country roads and suburbia to the west. With a highway cutting the bustling downtown of East Milton in half, it makes the neighborhood feel both large and small, depending on which side of the road you are on!

The commercial area around East Milton is centered on East Milton Square, which is considered a historical landmark. On the other side of the square is a more residential side of the community. Milton itself is split into three parts—Milton, Milton Center, and East Milton—as well as a few distinct neighborhoods shared throughout the area. Overall, Milton is less populated than some other towns and cities around Boston. The total population is around 27,000 people.

Near East Milton is Laboure College, a nursing school; the Fontbonne Covent; and the St. Joseph Retreat House.

The History of East Milton

East Milton was on an offshoot of the settlement of Milton during the 1630s. The first trader in the area, Richard Callicott, set up a post along the Neponset River and negotiated with the local natives. He purchased the land shortly after, and by 1650, others arrived. Milton was named in honor of Milton Abbey in Dorset, England. In 1774, the Suffolk Resolves—the model for the Declaration of Independence—was signed in Milton. Although it is not located in East Milton, the house where the Suffolk Resolves were signed still stands, though it was moved to a new location in West Milton (1370 Canton Avenue) at a later date.

Two early governors of Massachusetts resided in Milton. The Governor Belcher House dates back to 1777 and is presently privately owned on Governor Belcher Lane of East Milton. Other houses belonging to historical figures have been destroyed, unfortunately.

East Milton Square has played a role in American history. The Granite Railway, which passed through Quincy and Milton, formed in 1826. It was one of the first chartered railways in America. Today, you can see a centennial plaque and an original switch frog at a piece of remaining track at East Milton Square. Without the Granite Railway, East Milton may have never grown to be what it is today. It is no wonder East Milton has the moniker “Railway Village.” What is presently the US Post Office for East Milton was once known as the Blue Bell Tavern and Hotel, also used to be the Granite Railway headquarters.

One of the more recent developments within East Milton has been the planning of Manning Community Park, which was proposed around 2017. The plan is innovative and calls for the formation of a gathering spot above the Southeast Expressway, allowing for youth to gather in a safe place. This is also meant to tie together two sides of East Milton since it is cleaved in two by I-93. Currently, the “deck” of Manning Community Park has opened and is a unique architectural feature within East Milton. Even if you don’t have children, you are bound to enjoy the sight of the town and the highway below.

East Milton Today

Are you planning on visiting East Milton today? Even if you are passing through while on the way to another place in Massachusetts, there is a lot to see in and around the community. In the immediate vicinity of East Milton Square, there is the Milton Art Center, Church of Christ in Milton, and the United States Postal Service. Now, while the latter might sound commonplace, the building itself is historical and has been around since the late 18th century. There is also the gorgeous St. Agatha Church nearby.

For food, East Milton is definitely a place to stop. Aside from Boston favorites like Starbucks and Bruegger’s Bagels, there are several classy dining options, including Novara Italian, Abby Park, and Ichiro Sushi.

Slightly farther east, you can find two parks—Crane Field and Andrews Park—where you can enjoy some greenery and sunshine. If you go north, the Presidents Golf Course awaits. There is also Furnace Brook Golf Club in West Quincy. If you are interested in the Granite Railway, head farther south to the Granite Links, Quarry Hills, and the Quincy Quarries Reservation

Overall, East Milton is a great little community to stop for a few hours and explore. It is on the way to many other great places, as well, so it is convenient to reach, especially by car.
