Throughout the mid and late 1800s, East Somerville was developed according to the urban model of that time. This resulted in several buildings that show both Italianate and Greek Revival architecture along Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Vernon, and Perkins Street. East Somerville is also where Mudflat, a center of the arts.
In the past, East Somerville belonged to Charlestown. It is known as the oldest section of Somerville and is also one of the most densely populated areas. However, before it became home to commuters, it had a historic role as one of the places Paul Revere visited during his midnight ride. Revere rode along Broadway, the main thoroughfare through East Somerville, and that brought him to Winter Hill. Every Patriot’s Day, Somerville celebrates that historic ride.
Later, in the 1800s, East Somerville featured Mt. Benedict, a drumlin of rounded clay. A convent was founded upon Mt. Benedict that overlooked the Mystic River. This convent caused conflict between Catholics and Protestants, however, and in 1834 a Protestant mob burning the Mt. Benedict convent down. The land was sold off. Today, the area is called the “Nunnery Grounds.”
