The Esplanade is a long, winding green space along the Charles River in Boston’s Back Bay. On a map, the Esplanade might seem like just a narrow stretch of green, but it is, in reality, is a bright space alongside the river, where cherry trees blossom and smiles are abound. It is a perfect place to walk and experience Boston, as well as to get a reprieve. If you love the outdoors and fresh air, the Charles River Esplanade is an excellent attraction to visit at least once.
The Esplanade is a relatively new piece of Boston but is also well received, well-loved, and as integral to Boston life as Central Park is to New York. In other words, the Back Bay area of Boston wouldn’t be as it is if there was no Esplanade. The Esplanade is part of the Charles River Reservation park and is a designated Boston Landmark as of 2009.
The Esplanade is about three miles in length and runs along the Charles River from the Boston Museum of Science towards Boston University Bridge. Within the confines of the park are various attractions, including recreational facilities, trekking, and cycling paths, the Hatch Memorial Shell, playgrounds for young children, and over five miles of pathways.
The Esplanade was formed in the early 20th century, making it one of the newer sections of the Back Bay area. Once the landfill project of the 1870s had been completed and there was a new seawall along the northern banks of the Charles River, the smell was overwhelming. Because of that, the city decided to dam the Charles River, and in doing so, they created a mudflat.
Arthur Shurcliff, a landscape architect, decided to change the mudflats into something else at the beginning of 1930. His design was the start of the Esplanade that Boston knows today. The water’s edge was more defined, trees were planted, and docks, paths, and other monuments were incorporated around the mudflats.
The Hatch Memorial Shell was constructed in 1941 and was where the Pops and other musical artists started presenting summertime events. In 1946, a community boathouse was built. That launched the country’s first boating program for public use. However, it was the construction of the limited access to Storrow Drive during the 1950s that brought the biggest change to the park. In creating the road, islands and inlets were formed.
Whenever you head to Boston, the Charles River Esplanade is a must-see destination. Not only is the park amazingly beautiful throughout the year, but the Esplanade also has events and a bunch of things to do. If you love doing outdoor activities, the Esplanade is the place to be. On a sunny day, you can rent kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddleboards. There are several locations along the Charles River where you can rent one of the boats from April to October.
There are also fitness classes at the Esplanade. The fitness classes are free and are taught by local professionals from Boston. You might come across Yoga, running, Bootcamp, Zumba, and more. There are also annual events such as the Boston Pops Independence Day Concert, fireworks, the Esplanade 5K Run, the Moondance Gala, and the Annual Summer Dock Party. If you want to know more about the events going on at the Esplanade, check out the official website (https://esplanade.org/the-esplanade/).
Other points of interest along the Esplanade include the Boston University Bridge, the Sailing Pavilion, the Docks at Boston University, Harvard Bridge, and the BU Beach. There are also plenty of other sites around the Boston University campus, including the Tsai Performance Center. The Esplanade Cycling and Trekking path farther north is also near the Esplanade Hatch and Night Shift Owls Nest, a beer garden. Nearby is the gorgeous Boston Public Garden and Boston Commons.
If you get hungry while wandering the Esplanade, you have plenty of choices. Close to the northernmost section of the Esplanade is Charles Street, which is lined with a bunch of restaurants, including Cheers. There is also the Beacon Hill Pub, Harvard Gardens, Panificio Bistro & Bakery, and 75 Chestnut.
Getting to the Esplanade depends on from which direction you are headed. The simplest way is to take the MBTA. You can take the Red Line to Charles/MGH Station. From there, you can walk to the park.
Perhaps you’re a busy Esplanade parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
