There are dozens of historic districts throughout Boston and its numerous neighborhoods, including Dorchester. With a long history, Dorchester has plenty of places that have been around since the dawn of the United States and earlier. One of those locations happens to be Fields Corner. The area is full of historical buildings and restaurants and green spaces, making it an exciting spot to discover lesser-known facts about the growth of Boston. Whether you love architecture or are just seeking out the hidden gems of Boston and beyond, Fields Corner is an excellent point of interest to add to your trip itinerary.
Fields Corner is located in Dorchester, one of the most populated and diverse neighborhoods in the Greater Boston area. Fields Corner has its own MBTA Red Line station, and multiple buses stop throughout, making the community a convenient place to live and shop. Along with Codman Square and Upham’s Corner, Fields Corner is considered one of the commercial hubs of Dorchester. The neighborhood is noted to have a rich selection of international cuisine, including Latin, Irish, Vietnamese, and Caribbean flavors.
One fun fact about Fields Corner is that the pub at 1505 Dorchester Avenue called the Blarney Stone is said to be where the first Guinness beer was served in the US.
In 2014, Fields Corner was called on the 10 Great Neighborhoods in America, according to the American Planning Association. Fields Corner was the only New England neighborhood to be on the list. The rise and prosperity of the area are mainly attributed to the collaboration of the residents, including the large ex-pat community of Vietnamese. Fields Corner has one of the largest Vietnamese populations in the whole country.
Fields Corner has been around since 1630. The area was named after Zechariah Field, who was born in East Ardsley, Yorkshire, England, about 1600. He arrived in Boston in 1629 and decided to move to Dorchester. Zechariah Field was the grandson of a famous English astronomer, John Field. However, the name “Fields Corner” is also because of Zechariah’s sons, Enos and Isaac, who had opened up a general store at the interaction of Dorchester Avenue and Adams Street.
Many of the buildings seen around Fields Corner today were constructed between the 1800s and 1900s. This includes the Lenane Building and One Arcadia Place. The Loews Theatre on Park Street is another historical landmark in Fields Corner.
Because of the commercial nature of Fields Corner, much of the history pertains to who or what occupied which address and when. For example, the Lenane Building was initially owned by T. Edward Sheehan, an architect who brought many triple-decker houses to the area. For many years, the Lenane Building contained businesses like Sargent’s Hat and Cap Store or Ligget Drugs (which is why some current residents will call the place Ligget Building instead).
During the 1920s, Fields Corner transformed and expanded. More buildings that rose several stories tall were constructed, including those stone edifices with parapets. Within these buildings were things like Chinese laundries, bakeries, shoe repair, and more.
Visiting Fields Corner is a must if you love a busy atmosphere and historical buildings. The commercial district has plenty of places to see and things to do, and it is also easy to get to. Once you have arrived in Fields Corner, the first thing you must do is check out all of the beautiful buildings. Go to the triangular corner created by Dorchester Avenue and Adams Street to have a look at the scenery, snap a few pictures, and then walk along either street. Down by Lincoln Street, there are several businesses with interesting architectural details.
Now, you had better come to Fields Corner hungry, because there are so many amazing restaurants throughout the area. Some of the best Asian restaurants include Saigon Seafood, Yuen B.B.Q, Dot Cafe, and Ang Hong Vietnamese Restaurant. Looking for a place to wet the whistle? The Blarney Stone will load you up with beer and Irish pub grub. Optionally, you can visit Twelve Ben’s. Of course, there are also a dozen places to satisfy your sweet tooth, like Bambu, Chill on Park, Coco Leaf, and Sweet Sip.
Once you have refueled, you can tour other places along Dorchester Avenue and Adams Street, too. For instance, there is the Doherty-Gibson Playground to the south or take a walk north towards Meeting House Hill. You are also close to Clam Point and the Dorchester Shores Reservation. Depending on how far you want to walk, you can even head farther south towards Ashmont Hill, where there are even more preserved houses with a broad range of architectural styles.
A trip to Fields Corner is bound to satisfy your belly and your eyes with all it has to offer. So what are you waiting for?
Perhaps you’re a busy Fields Corner parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home.
