Called one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Brookline, Fisher Hill is a gently sloping district with large, picturesque houses, manicured lots, and tree-lined streets. The gorgeous layout of the neighborhood was planned by Frederick Law Olmstead, and since the beginning, it has been a quiet residential area. Due to having many prominent residents throughout the years, Fisher Hill is also historic and is often toured by visitors to Boston.
Here is everything you need to know about Fisher Hill if you plan on visiting:
Within Norfolk County, about four miles from Boston’s downtown, you can find a large town called Brookline. The suburban area is noted for the age of the large homes and the mature age of residents, as well as the expensive real estate market. Many residents in Brookline are professionals in the field of education and medicine.
Through the past few decades, Brookline—as well as Fisher Hill—has maintained a stable population that fluctuates between 54,000 and 59,000. Brookline is also very racially diverse, with a large Asian population. Interestingly, about 82.5 percent of the population is also considered “aged.”
Fisher Hill grew throughout the early 1800s, during a time when wealthier families wanted larger houses but didn’t want to be too far from Boston, particularly during the summer months. Due to the effort of many families in the area, many of the estates are still single-family homes. Others have been transformed into apartment complexes.
Brookline started as an agricultural settlement during the 17th century but quickly transformed once streetcars were introduced to Boston during the middle of the 19th century. Throughout 1900, the remaining land was bought and divided up for development, which connected to the pre-existing mass transit stations.
The Fisher Hill Historic District was named in 1985. The district is framed by Chestnut Hill Avenue, Channing Road, and Baxter Road on the west. Dean Road and Chestnut Hill Road are to the east. In 1914, a covenant between homeowners in Fisher Hill enabled them to keep their estates as single-family homes instead of being transformed into other kinds of establishments.
One of the most popular homes that still stands today is the estate built by Joseph H. White at 541-45 Boylston Street. The design was featured in an architecture book from Paris called L’Architecture Americaine. Other homes usually featured in walking tours of the area include the Pump House of 1887, the house at 75 Fisher Avenue, 23 and 33 Leicester Street, and the Longyear Estate. Many other homes can be seen on Buckminster Road, all of them with stunning and distinct features, such as Colonial Revival elements. One house at 219 Buckminster has a unique “Arts and Crafts” style that is worthy of a photograph or two.
If you want to read more about the history of Fisher Hill, the Brookline Historical Society and Brookline Preservation Commission both have plenty of information posted online [1,2]. You can also learn more about touring the Fisher Hill Historic District.
One of the more recent projects includes the creation of the Fisher Hill Reservoir Park. The old MWRA Fisher Hill Reservoir was converted over to a 10-acre park for Brookline and Fisher Line since there was a lack of green space. Over 1,300 additional trees and shrubs were planted around the park, and by the end of 2016, it was opened to the public.
Because Fisher Hill is a historic area that is purely residential, you will find a serene community in an otherwise undeveloped area. Though the surroundings have changed throughout the years, most homes continue to be private property. Therefore, if you plan to visit today, it is probably to see those gorgeous displays of architecture and to enjoy the outdoors. You can also see the Fisher Hill Reservoir.
Once you have toured the Fisher Hill area, you can cross over Route 9 to take a break by the Brookline Reservoir Park. The lake there offers up plenty of tranquil views. Or you can visit the Chestnut Hill Reservoir in the opposite direction. Beside the park is the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum, if you are interested in learning more about Boston’s water system. Fisher Hill also connects to many other points of interest throughout the area, including Emerson Gardens, Coolidge Corner, and North Brookline.
Perhaps you’re a busy Fisher Hill parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Fisher Hill don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task. You can arrive at home knowing that your house has been cleaned by a qualified team of professionals and will shine from top to bottom.
