Many places throughout Boston are residential in nature but also make for beautiful spots to explore. Sometimes, seeing the neighborhoods where locals spend their downtime is just as exciting as wandering around the downtown area. Since many visitors in Boston check out Franklin Park and Franklin Park Zoo, you should also spend some time along the streets of the neighborhood called Franklin Field. Diverse and vibrant, Franklin Field should not be underestimated.
Franklin Field is split into two neighborhoods—north and south. Franklin Field North contains the largest park in the entire city, Franklin Park. The western limits of Franklin Park form one boundary of the neighborhood, while Seaver Street borders the north. Greenwood Street is the eastern edge, and Harambee Park is to the south, which is also the northern edge of Franklin Field South. Meanwhile, Franklin Field South consists mainly of Scarboro Pond, a portion of Blue Hills Avenue, some of Dorchester Center, and south into Mattapan.
In other words, Franklin Field, as a whole, covers a lot of neighborhoods in Dorchester. Although it is predominantly residential, there are also some commercial sections, making it a convenient place to live.
The population of Franklin Field North is around 30,000 people, with over 60 percent being Black or African American. Another 25 percent is Hispanic or Latino. Franklin Field South is much less populated—around 11,000 people—but shares a similar racial breakdown. Both areas of Franklin Field are densely packed. Furthermore, Franklin Field has a high population of children and adolescents. The median age for both the north and south sections is around 25 years of age.
Franklin Field North has plenty of things to do, including Franklin Park, the Franklin Park Zoo, White Stadium, walking trails, and the William J. Devine Golf Course. The neighborhood is also near Downtown Boston, the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, and has easy access to the MBTA Commuter Rail. Franklin Field South has Harambee Park, St. Mary’s Cemetery, and several shops and restaurants along Blue Hill Avenue to discover.
Much of Franklin Field’s history is connected to the development of Franklin Park. The parkland is made up of 527 acres that spread across Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, and Dorchester. The park was created in the 19th century by Frederick Law Olmstead and is considered to be the most significant section of the Emerald Necklace project. Although the park was neglected for some time, it is now considered the crowning jewel of Olmstead’s project.
In the past, Franklin Park was called West Roxbury Park, but it was later renamed to honor Boston native Benjamin Franklin. He had put in his will that he wanted some of his estate to be donated to a worthy cause. The park has a mixture of untouched nature, recreational areas, and a wooded preserve. Presently, there are over six miles of roads and over fifteen miles of pedestrian walkways.
There are some glimpses of the past still visible in Franklin Field park, too, such as the Roxbury Puddingstone outcroppings and the Bear Dens (also called the Long Crouch Woods of Roxbury). The Bear Dens had been built in 1912 and closed around 1954.
Now, how did the neighborhood get its name? That is thanks to Harambee Park, which was previously known as Franklin Field. The plot of land was another design of Frederick Law Olmstead’s and was meant to be a play for Bostonians to play outside. More recently, part of the grounds has been reclaimed and transformed into a housing project.
A visit to Franklin Field North and South is in order if you plan to see the largest park in all of Boston. Naturally, you will want to see all Franklin Park has to offer, such as the Franklin Park Zoo, the William J. Devine Golf Course, Scarboro Pond, the 99 Steps, and Ellicott Arch, the Bear Dens, and the Elma Lewis Playhouse in the Park.
You can also pick up some food around Dorchester Center or along Blue Hill Avenue to have a picnic in the park! Some places to find some grub in Franklin Field include Stash’s Pizza off of Columbia Road, Rino’s Pizza, the Haitian restaurant Natifnatal, or Boston Fried Chicken.
Some attractions that are close to Franklin Field include Mt. Hope Cemetery and the Mass Audubon’s Boston Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary. If you decide to explore Dorchester, you can head east towards the historic Meeting House Hill or go south towards the Neponset River, since there are plenty of historic districts along the river to explore.
Overall, Franklin Field is a perfect place for a pit stop while traveling between Franklin Park and other destinations throughout Dorchester. Where will you go first?
