Located within Suffolk County, part of the City of Boston is a diverse little area known as Grove Hall. The streets are lined with businesses, restaurants, and historic buildings that date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Largely residential, Grove Hall is where many immigrants have settled throughout the years, bringing glimpses of their old homelands to the landscape of Boston.
Here, you can see churches, synagogues, and preserved historical buildings. The quiet residential settings make Grove Hall a wonderful place to walk around, soaking up the friendly face, and ambiance.
One of the things about Grove Hall that people notice right away is the character. There are several corner bodegas, apartments over first floor stores, Victorian edifices, duplexes, and even three-deckers that were built many years ago. The neighborhood is extremely dense, with 21,645 people per square mile. That makes Grove Hall 95.5 percent denser than only neighborhoods in Boston.
Grove Hall has numerous Colonial and Victorian homes lining the streets. 66.7 percent of the real estate in the neighborhood was constructed before 1939, making the concentration of historic homes one of the highest in the United States. In short, it’s a picturesque place that is sure to inspire you.
Aside from the lovely surroundings, you will also notice that the people who live in Grove Hall are diverse. About 17.1 percent of the people dwelling in Grove Hall are of Haitian descent while another 10.3 percent have Dominican ancestors. Puerto Ricans make up around 17 percent of the population, as well. About 26 percent of Grove Hall residents are from a foreign country. Interestingly, 8.7 percent of residents speak French, and you will see signs throughout the neighborhood reflecting this fact.
Much of Grove Hall’s history is interconnected with the growth of Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan. This means that these areas south of Boston were later developed and annexed. For many years, the ground was agricultural.
In the early 1800s, Grove Hall was but a mansion constructed atop a knoll between Blue Hill Avenue and Washington Street. For the first half of the 1800s, the area surrounding the manor remained largely pastoral. Until the annexation of Roxbury in 1868, much of Grove Hall had not been developed. But once Roxbury was part of Boston, more and more people started to arrive and settle around Grove Hall. Many of these new arrivals were Jewish.
Several Jewish centers opened in the early 1900s. By the 1950s, around 70,000 Jews resided around Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan, making it the largest Jewish community in all of New England at the time.
Since then, Grove Hall has transformed. Much of the neighborhood is undergoing restoration after a small economic slump. In fact, between 1993 and 2003, Grove Hall received investments that allowed for the construction of affordable housing, businesses, and jobs. One example is the Mecca Mall that opened in the middle of Grove Hall in 2000-2001. Historic buildings, such as Regents Hall (now called Silva Building) was refurbished and reopened.
Another interesting and more recent development in Grove Hall was the opening of the city’s first legal pot dispensary. Pure Oasis on Blue Hill Avenue in Grove Hill received a lot of buzz from the media for being Boston’s first recreational cannabis shop.
Grove Hall history is extensive. If you would like to read more, be sure to check out the full article (http://www.greatergrovehall.org/grove-hall-history/) provided by Greater Grove Hall Main Streets (GGHMS), the local organization.
