South of Boston, nestled among the water and surrounded by greenery, is Hingham, one of the oldest places in Massachusetts. Although part of the Great Boston area, Hingham, MA feels like a world all of its own, due to its colonial history and attractions. If you are looking for someplace new to visit in Massachusetts, Hingham will make for a great road trip destination.
The 2010 census totaled up the population of Hingham at 19,882, which was an 11% increase from 2000. Going on that trend, one may assume that the current population of Hingham is around 21,000 people. The racial breakdown of the population is predominantly white. The ages of the population are rather spread out, with nearly a third of the population being 18 years old and under.
The median income for residents in 2010 was around $83,000, which makes the town rather wealthy. There are also several public schools, including four elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and the South Shore Educational Collaborative. Hingham is also home to five private schools, including a Montessori school for children.
There are several famous names in history that either hailed from Hingham or who were descended from people who dwelled there. One is General Benjamin Lincoln from the American Revolutionary War. There were, however, several Lincoln families dwelling in Hingham, all unrelated, and one of those bloodlines belonged to Abraham Lincoln, the nation’s sixteenth president.
As mentioned earlier, this town is one of the oldest in the state. Settlers were dwelling in Hingham as early as 1633. Back then, Hingham was known as “Bearcove” or “Barecove,” depending on which records you are looking over. Many speculate that the name “Barecove” is due to how the entire harbor is exposed and barren during low tide. The town was later incorporated in 1635. Prior to that only eleven other towns had been incorporated.
Interestingly, Hingham was born out of a religious schism. The original founders of the town had been forced to flee their village upon falling out of the Anglican doctrines. Two reverends thus sold their belongings and made the journey from Norfolk, England to Hingham, where they could practice their religion as they saw fit. Many settlers from other surrounding villages came to seek guidance, and from this, the town started to grow.
While other areas around Hingham grew more densely populated, the town has remained rather unchanged throughout the years. These days, it is largely residential. Because Hingham sits upon the Boston Harbor, it has many streams and ponds cutting through town and multiple conservation areas.
With all the unspoiled greenery surrounding Hingham, it is one of those places where you should come prepared to hike around. There are several beautiful nature conversation sites, including the Weymouth/Hingham Back River Area and Bare Cove Park. The expansive Wompatuck State Park is to the southeast, while the stunning World’s End trail is to the very north. Smaller parks include Weir River Park, Foundry Pond Area, Home Meadow, and Triphammer Woods and Pond.
Points of interest around Hingham include:
The locals enjoy spending their time downtown, where you can find a number of stores and restaurants, but the harbor area is very popular as well. Downtown, be sure to stop by Peel Pizza Company, a favorite for delicious pizza pies or Square Care, where upscale dining meets urban flair. There’s also Nona’s Homemade, where you can taste ice cream concoctions that are out of this world.
Along the water, you can find the beautiful Bathing Beach and the Hingham Farmer’s Market. There are plenty more shops and boutiques to explore, as well as cafes with waterfront views. Why not meet some of the locals at Stars On Hingham Harbor, a place for good beer and better company?
Of course, all around Hingham, you are bound to find beautiful scenery, picturesque buildings, friendly taverns, and much more. Whether you want to enjoy the fresh air or the history, the harbor views or a lakeside picnic, there is something for everyone to enjoy here!
Perhaps you’re a busy Hingham parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
