Cambridge is already lively, but when you head to Inman Square, you will see just how brilliant and dynamic a place can be. Inman Square has a mix of housing above ground floor business, nightlife and quiet residential streets, and a strong sense of community. Not only does Inman Square play a role in Cambridge’s local economy, but it is also a place that fosters neighborly relationships and cultural diversity. Historic and innovative, Inman Square is a place to see and experience.
Here is everything you need to know about Inman Square:
Inman Square is a tiny area in a thriving cityscape, but it has been pivotal to the growth of Cambridge’s economy since the 18th century. One walk through Inman Square will show you a vision of an international community, complete with ethnic cuisines, independently owned shops, and Greater Boston’s single community bathhouse. There’s also an emerging art scene, so if you are looking for independent artists to support, but sure to check out the local performance spaces.
As of 2019, over 13,000 residents of Cambridge dwell within the vicinity of Inman Square, which includes Ward Two, Mid-Cambridge, and Wellington-Harrington communities. The square has a rapidly growing population of immigrants for Asia and Latin America. The Black and African-American populations are increasing as well. During the daily working hours, Inman Square’s restaurants and other businesses bring in around 8,000 workers and thousands more visitors and tourists.
Inman Square has 2 Bluebike stations, five bus routes (CT2 69, 83, 85, and 91), a single public parking lot with 28 parking spaces, and more. The bike score is 99, and the walk score is 93, meaning that Inman Square is the perfect place to explore on foot.
It is believed that Inman Square owes its name to Ralph Inman, who was a Boston merchant. Inman’s life was one of fortune and fame, and he had large mansions as well. While Inman had hoped to remain neutral during the American Revolutionary War, his son decided to join the British, and that led to the authorities confiscating everything you owned. Ralph Inman fled and left his wife, Elizabeth Murray, to deal with the police.
However, the square where Inman’s mansion was located initially did not truly originate until the 19th century. Though there was trade going on around the area that became Inman Square during 1790, the square was the result of the grid-work streets connecting Cambridge to Boston and other towns around the city. By 1860, horse-drawn wagons were encircling the area and houses popping up. In 1881, the first railway ran through the square, and in 1900, there was finally a streetcar to shuttle those in the area to Boston. During these years, Inman Square was also called “Atwood’s Corner.”
The 1900s and beyond were when Inman Square prospered. 1910 and beyond introduced foot traffic, automobiles and streetcars to the scene. Commercial buildings seemed to sprout from the earth, bringing markets, bakeries, taverns, pharmacies, and other convenient stores to the local community. From the 21st century, Inman Square became much more diverse as students, and young professionals were attracted to the area by Harvard and MIT.
There is so much to do in Inman Square these days that you probably will want to visit a couple of days during your trip to Boston. Not only is the area swimming with entertainment, but it also boasts one of the best nightlife and bar scenes in the Greater Boston area. There are dozens of drinking spots and clubs, as well as a bunch of places with affordable prices. Just beyond Inman Square are a bunch of attractions as well.
First, let’s talk about some of the best restaurants around Inman Square that you can find open today. Most people will immediately recommend Trina’s Starlite Lounge, a place with an expansive brunch menu, stellar drinks, and loaded hot dogs. If you want mouthwatering Eastern Mediterranean, try Moona. Love Indian food? Then Punjabi Dhaba is right next door. The Druid is listed as an essential Boston Irish pub, so you shouldn’t pass it up if you love the pub scene. Of course, there is also the Momi Momi Japanese izakaya to try. And if you want to top off your international food tour, grab dessert at Christina’s Homemade Ice Cream or 1369 Coffee House.
Aside from food, there are little boutiques for arts and crafts, as well as sports clubs, jewelers, specialty food grocers, and so on. A short walk from Inman Square along Hampshire Street, you can find the Elm and Hampshire Plaza for a sweet spot to sit and relax. Or you can head towards the Joan Lorentz Park, near the Cambridge Public Library, or go north towards Lincoln Park.
