Norfolk County has a number of great little towns and green spaces. The population is vibrant, as are the opportunities for making memories on your trip to Massachusetts. Islington, a neighborhood in the city of Westwood, is one of those places. Islington blends convenience with serenity, making it the ideal pit stop. There are plenty of things to do around Islington that will amuse travelers of all ages.
The area of Islington is technically part of Westwood, Massachusetts, but it is bordered by Dedham and sometimes referred to as Islington/Ellis. To the south is Norwood and the Norwood Airport, and to the east is the Neponset River. Westwood is the west, and there are housing developments and schools between Islington and Westwood, such as the Xaverian Brothers High School, Westwood High School, and Thurston Middle School.
Islington is noted to be a very affluent community, where it is not uncommon for every house to have a Mercedes or Audi or Hummer parked out front. Many residents have earned themselves a post-graduate degree, as well. Over half of the population of Islington is made up of executives, management, and other administrative positions. There are about 17,000 people in all of Westwood, and a significant fraction lives in Islington, so that gives you a decent snapshot of the community.
Islington Station is served by the MBTA Franklin Line/Foxboro Pilot Commuter. The station is a popular spot for photographers and videographers who enjoy watching trains. Another station close to Islington is Dedham Corp. Center/128, which drops you off right at Rustcraft Road, near a major shopping center and several hotels.
The five leading hotels in the area make Islington an excellent choice for a day trip or a quivck getaway to or from Boston. There is the Hilton Boston/Dedham, Fairfield Inn by Marriott, Residence Inn by Marriott, Holiday Inn Boston-Dedham, and Budget Inn-Westwood.
Islington, being a part of both Westwood and Dedham—for reasons soon to be mentioned—is connected to the growth of both areas. Dedham was settled in 1635, and the land that became known as Westwood was a part of it until 1641. Incorporated in 1636, Dedham soon became Norfolk County’s seat. Interestingly, when Dedham was first settled, the colonists wanted to name their new home, “Contentment.” However, the Massachusetts General Court decided that Dedham was more apropos because most residents had initially come from Dedham, England.
Westwood, then called West Dedham, as mentioned earlier, separated from Dedham a few years after the incorporation. It took until 1897 for Westwood to actually be recognized and officially incorporated on its own. From the beginning, the residents of Westwood who dwelled in the Clapboard Trees Precinct were remarkably wealthy and sophisticated. They also had an affinity for religious liberalism and rejected the Calvinist views pervading Dedham. That is why they were asked to remove themselves from Dedham.
Since then, the population has retained the trend of wealth and education. In 2005, Money magazine and CNN/Money named Westwood 13th on a collection of the 100 Best Places to Live in the United States. Furthermore, Gay Street, which connects Westwood’s center to Islington, was named by Boston magazine as one of the best streets in the Boston region.
Today, Islington is a thriving section of Westwood-Dedham that has its own community and characteristics. There are entertainments for anyone, including winding roads, conveniently located shops and restaurants, winding rivers and trails, and much more. You can walk around and find plenty to keep yourself busy today in Islington.
If you decide to come by car or don’t mind walking from one of the MBTA stations, you can find an abundance of stores and restaurants along Providence Highway, just north of Islington. Closer to the center of Islington is Lambert’s Rainbow Market and Rainbow Square, where you can find a famous bakery called Dessert Works.
Want to try your hand at archery? You can head to BayState Archers Training Center, just off of Route 1, near several car dealerships and Frugal Fannie’s Fashion and Shoe Warehouse—a local shopping institution.
There is plenty of activities that let you get outside and enjoy the day. You can visit the Norfolk Golf Club, just east of the MBTA Islington Station. You can wander around Morrison Field or the O Toole or Wentworth Area. Near Gay Street and Purgatory Brook are four nature conservation zones: Mulvehill Conservation, Grimm Conservation, Lowell Woods, and Sandy Valley. Closer to Westwood is Rice Reservation, which has trails surrounding a lake. If you have children with you, you might prefer the Ellis Gardens Playground to the south of Islington along Route 1.
There are plenty of things to do in Islington today, so why not head down from Boston to see what is happening? You can walk the streets, enjoy the serene green spaces, some high-end shopping, and maybe even walk away with a new car!
Perhaps you’re a busy Islington parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
