Jamaica Hills is where the grass is green, and the hills seem to roll endlessly into the horizon. It’s a picturesque location where the Emerald Necklace unwinds, and plenty of historic sites are tucked away on residential streets. There is a bustling commercial center that ties Jamaica Hills into Jamaica Plain. If you are looking for a historical location with lots of greenery to explore, then Jamaica Hills is a fantastic spot to experience.
Jamaica Hills is considered a sub-neighborhood of Jamaica Plain and sits to the northwest of the Arnold Arboretum and includes both Green Hill and Moss Hill. Buttonwood Village borders the neighborhood to the west, High Street Hill and Mission Hill to the north, Jamaica Plain’s Egleston Square and Stonybrook to the east, and Roslindale to the south.
There are many points of interest within Jamaica Hills. This includes Lawrence Farm, the Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Pond and its surroundings, and other green spaces connected to the Emerald Necklace. Did you know that Jamaica Pond has over 60 acres of surface area and is the deepest and most significant body of freshwater in all of Boston? It’s an excellent place.
The main thoroughfares through Jamaica Hills are Jamaicaway/Pond Street and Centre Street. Pond Street takes you down along the green spaces and hills then out towards Buttonwood Village and Showa Park. Centre Street divides Jamaica Hill from the rest of Jamaica Plain. On the Jamaica Hills side of the street, you can find several restaurants, stores, schools, places of worship, and much more.
The history of Jamaica Hills is connected to that of the broader neighborhood, Jamaica Plain. As you know, Jamaica Hills is composed of several pieces of the Emerald Necklace and hillier parts of the region, including Olmstead Park, Willow Pond Meadow, and most of the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University.
It is not really known when Jamaica Plain got its name, but there have been maps throughout the ages that called the area Jamaica Plain. It is thought that Jamaica Hills and Jamaica Plain are referencing a role in the Trade Triangle, which involved rum, sugar, and slavery. However, another theory is that Jamaica is an anglicized pronunciation of a Native American name.
Other significant parts of history, including Jamaica Hills, includes the development of Moss Hill (Bowditch Hill), a 200-acre estate that was named after the Bowditch family. In the mid-nineteenth century, Jonathan Bowditch brought his family to Moss Hill to settle down. In 1885, Alfred, the son of Jonathan Bowditch, constructed an estate that still stands to this day. There are memoirs about life upon Moss Hill that were written by Rosamond Bowditch Loring and Mary Orne Bowditch.
Another historical individual of Jamaica Hills is Ellen Swallow Richards. Her house still stands on the corner of Dane Street and Eliot Street. Richards was not born in Jamaica Hills, but she did move there later in life. Richards was the first woman to be accepted into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she studied chemistry. For many years, she was a lecturer, university professor, and researcher; she also helped establish multiple institutions to help the less fortunate, including the New England Kitchen of Boston, the Rumford Kitchen, and the American Public School Lunch Program.
Present-day Jamaica Hills has undergone a lot of changes. Although not as affected by urban renewal as other parts of Jamaica Plain, it does remain a diverse and youthful community. Much of Jamaica Plain is made up of Spanish-speaking populations, and Jamaica Hills is no different. Because of that, you might see some influences from the Latin Quarter around the rolling green hills.
One of the things you have to do while in Jamaica Hills is to see the Emerald Necklace. You can start at the beginning at Olmstead Park, walk around Leverett Pond, and then go south towards Willow Pond Meadow, Wards Pond, the Pinebank Promontory, and Jamaica Pond. If you cut down the Arborway, you can immediately get to the Arnold Arboretum and spend most of the day wandering the tree-lined trails. While you are walking around Jamaica Hills, please stop by the Ellen Swallow Richards House to learn more about her fascinating life.
If you want to enjoy more than fresh air and sunshine, stroll along Centre Street. Are you hungry for something international? Then try out one of the many places along Perkins Street. The Haven, which is at the corner of Center and Perkins Streets, is where you can try traditional Scottish fare. Other options include fine dining at Canary Square or Mexican at Acapulco or tapas at Tres Gatos.
There are several stops along the E Branch of the MBTA Green Line that goes along Centre Street that connect to the Emerald Necklace, such as Riverway, Back of the Hill, and Heath Street stations. If you prefer taking the bus, routes 35, 39, and 41 all stop along Centre Street.
Perhaps you’re a busy Jamaica Hills parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.

All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task.
