JAMAICA PLAIN’S MOST TRUSTED HOUSE CLEANING REFERRAL AGENCY

There are 4.4 square miles in Boston devoted to one of the coolest neighborhoods around: Jamaica Plain. Once originally part of Roxbury, Jamaica Plain eventually made a name and history for itself throughout the years. Recently, it’s been named as one of the best communities in Massachusetts, and it just keeps getting better. Every day, there is something new and exciting happening in this thriving neighborhood, so why don’t you come and see what awaits?

The People and Places of Jamaica Plain

The neighborhood of Jamaica Plain, or JP, as called by the locals, is often seen as one of the best places to live in Massachusetts. As of 2010, the population of Jamaica Plain was 37,536. Interestingly, the population density of the area is around 13 percent lower than Boston, and the median age of the residents (33 years old) is 4 percent higher. About 61 percent of the population in JP is White; 14 percent is African American or Black, and 10 percent is Asian. There are also many Hispanic immigrants (about 20 percent).

Because of this, Jamaica Plains is eclectic and lively, a place where art and culture and entertainment meshes together beautifully. Locals have colored the streets with murals, and the scent of freshly baked bread fills the air. You can walk down the roads are see edifices of buildings that are rich in history, as well as newer, more contemporary architecture.

There are many historical sub-districts in Jamaica Plains. Some are no longer used by newer and younger residents. The well-known districts include Forest Hills, Woodbourne, Stonybrook, Hyde Square, and Sunnyside. Many of these places are, again, highly diverse and lively, despite being largely residential.

The History of Jamaica Plain

Around 1630, when Boston and Roxbury were founded, a man named William Heath settled along with family and a few others south of Parker Hill. During the next couple of years, other settlers, like John May and William Curtis, set up farms along Turtle Pond (part of Hyde Park) and around the Charles River. Other farms followed, setting up the tract of land that would soon become Jamaica Plain.

After the Pequot War, Joseph Weld received 278 acres of land. His son eventually built a house there, and for generations, the Weld family lived in what later becomes the Arnold Arboretum.

It was in the 17th century when the word “Jamaica” began appearing, but there is no one accepted theory, for now, the name “Jamaica Plain” came to be. Some believe that the origin refers to Jamaican rum. Others believe that Jamaica is an Anglicization of an Indian regent’s name. However, the name soon stuck. Some maps from the 19th century even referred to the area as “Jamaica Plains.”

Due to the growing population of Boston, the Jamaica area of Roxbury started to see a rise of markets in the 18th century. Later, the first church was built.

Once America gained independence, the 19th century was full of renovations for Jamaica Plain. An aqueduct was constructed, roads started to pan out, and commuters and local artisans and other specialists started to settle in JP. By 1850, the agricultural community had changed. 28 percent of the population considered themselves professionals or businessmen, and another 20 percent were from Ireland.

Once Jamaica Plain was annexed by Boston, the population exploded. The triple-decker house was introduced to the area (many examples still survive today) to help house everyone. Various industries include beer breweries like the Boston Beer Company, set up factories in JP. The Great Depression hit the region hard and it took many years to rebuild. Since then, JP has seen its ups and downs, but it has come back stronger than ever.

Jamaica Plain Today

Jamaica Plain is an urban zone that has been evolving endlessly over the past couple of decades. These days, it is a thriving community full of Hispanic bakeries, Irish pubs, and other ethnic eateries among endless murals on buildings and bountiful green space. Whether you feel artsy, hungry, or want to walk Boston’s Emerald Necklace, there are plenty of things to do in Jamaica Plain today.

One of the main reasons visitors come to JP is the Arnold Arboretum, a 281-acre park that was made in collaboration with Frederick Law Olmstead. The arboretum is open around the year, and there are free tours available on specific days. There are hundreds of trees, flowers, vines, and shrubs to discover.

Other green spaces include Olmstead Park, Jamaica Pond, Franklin Park (home to the Franklin Park Zoo), and the green cemetery, Forest Hills Cemetery. Furthermore, these are all connected by a pathways—Arborway, Jamaicaway, and Riverway—that is also part of the Emerald Necklace. If you want to spend the day kayaking, you can rent one from the Jamaica Pond Boat House.

A hidden gem that many Bostonians take special trips to JP for is the thrift store called 40 South Street. Here, you can find a rotating collection of clothing from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Once you start getting hungry, you’re going to want to refuel. Head first to J.P. Licks, a famous ice cream parlor with wild flavors and amazing ambiance. The original location still exists in JP! Of course, no trip to Jamaica Plains would be complete without a free Sam Adams Brewery Tour, which lets you see the brewing process and gives you deep insight into the founder himself.

So, now that you know a little more about Jamaica Plain and its rich history, why don’t you take a day trip and experience it for yourself?
