The neighborhood called Jamaica Plain is full of treasures, such as the Emerald Necklace and preserved homes around Jamaica Hill and Mission Hill. The area is replete with things to do, and you may find yourself spending a lot of time exploring Jamaica Plain in Boston. There is one feature of Jamaica Plain that you cannot overlook: the Jamaicaway. The Jamaicaway is a winding highway alongside Olmstead Park, leading up to Jamaica Pond and merging with Pond Street. Traveling along Jamaica Way is more than enough to keep your itinerary full.
Here is everything you need to know about Jamaicaway to make the most out of your stay.
Jamaicaway is an undivided road with four lanes that begins near the border of Brookline and extends through Jamaica Plain. The Jamaicaway, as it is sometimes called, was designed by the same architect who created the Emerald Necklace, the famous Frederick Law Olmstead. Jamaicaway connects the Riverway park to the Arborway. It is considered to be a part of the Pondside sub-neighborhood of Jamaica Plain.
Many of the homes that were constructed along Jamaicaway have attracted the interest of visitors and historical and architectural enthusiasts throughout the years. The oldest houses lining Jamaicaway were been built by wealthy Bostonians. These days, the person most associated with Jamaicaway is James Michael Curley, who was an Irish American and mayor of Boston. His house continues to stand today, and it is easy to make out, for there is a shamrock design upon the shutters.
Being that Jamaicaway is considered the main thoroughfare through Jamaica Plain, it has played a distinct role in leading to the further growth and suburbanization of the land. Jamaica Plain was once a part of Roxbury, another neighborhood of Boston, but it was later annexed in 1874.
The Jamaicaway was designed to accommodate carriages. In the past, even when Jamaica Plain was attracting wealthy Boston families, the area around Mission Hill (a district between Roxbury and Dorchester) was not considered a streetcar suburb. Jamaica Plain, however, was among some of the first streetcar suburbs in Boston, however. Because of this, people used carriages to get around. These days, Jamaicaway has become a significant thoroughfare for motor vehicles. In fact, it is somewhat congested throughout the day, for the road is close to the Longwood Medical and Academic Area, as well as roads leading to West Roxbury, Forest Hills, and other densely populated sections of Norfolk County.
Due to the construction of the road—the winding curves—there are numerous traffic accidents annually. It is comparable to the Schuylkill in Pennsylvania.
Jamaicaway also passes by the kettle pond called Jamaica pond, another part of the Emerald Necklace. The lake is sourced by the Muddy River and drains into the Charles River. There is some history surrounding Jamaica Pond. In 1874, the Jamaica Plain Ice Company had 350 employees who were hauling as much as 5,000 tons of ice from the water every single day.
The pond was also a site of an annual ice skating festival. However, in 1929, Mayor Curley—the same Curley whose house sits alongside Jamaicaway—had to cancel it. Fifty thousand skaters had to be evacuated because cracks had formed. These days, ice skating is forbidden.
These days, Jamaicaway provides access to numerous neighborhoods throughout Boston. Along the highway are apartments, small businesses, corporations, hotels, and much more. You can also see the gorgeous ponds and trees of the Emerald Necklace from your car window. When exploring the farther reaches of Boston, be sure to take a drive along Jamaicaway and check out the green spaces and nearby entertainment.
First, let’s talk about the parks that are immediately accessible from Jamaicaway. Starting at the top, right off of the Riverway is Olmstead Park and Leverett Pond. That flows into Willow Pond Meadow. At the intersection of Perkins Street, you will see Wards Pond; from there is the Pinebank Promontory and then Jamaica Pond. At the junction of Jamaicaway and Pond street stands the Jamaica Pond Boat House, where you can rent boats to paddle around the lake.
There may not be a whole lot along Jamaicaway, but at any time, you can make a turn and find yourself somewhere with amazing restaurants and historical buildings. If you turn on to Perkins Street, you can find a traffic circle surrounded by pubs, bars, and restaurants, such as the Blue Nile, Brendan Behan Pub, and The Haven. By taking Jamaicaway, you can also reach more famous attractions in Boston, such as the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, at the end of Arborway.
Overall, the Jamaicaway is an excellent route to take if you want to get to fabulous sites quickly while enjoying a view of the city. Though it is a short road, it’s a good drive—drive safe!
Perhaps you’re a busy Jamaicaway parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Jamaicaway don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family.
