Jeffries Point is a neighborhood in East Boston and has been home to members of the Kennedy family. It is a relatively up-and-coming area, and with a convenient location beside the international airport, it has plenty of things to see and do as well. When visiting Boston, East Boston, also called Eastie, is a must. And you cannot leave out a walkthrough Jeffries Point either.
Let’s have look at all Jeffries Point has to offer.
Because of the history of East Boston—Jeffries Point included—the population throughout the neighborhoods on the island is extremely varied. There are many ethnic groups dwelling in the same area. Many immigrants have moved to East Boston throughout the years, though the groups have changed throughout the years. In the beginning, during the 1900s, it was Irish and Canadians. Later, Russian Jews, Asians, Italians, and now, Latinos and Hispanics.
It is estimated at over 41,000 people live in East Boston. The racial breakdown in 2017 was 62.5 percent White, 57.7 percent Hispanic, 26.8 percent two or more races, and 3.5 percent Asian. Italians and Irish continue to make up most of the population, but other groups, such as Mexicans, Brazilians, Puerto Ricans, Germans, Polish, and Arabs live in East Boston too.
Jeffries Point also contains the immense Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). It is one of the biggest and busiest airports in America but also has the second smallest carbon foot of the 20 largest international airports in the country. Impressive, right? Boston Logan International covers about 1,700 acres of land and is framed by Boston Harbor.
Much of Jeffries Point history is connected to the rest of East Boston, including how it was formed and developed from that point onward. That is because Jeffries Point was the earliest place in Eastie to be settled, shortly after the creation of Noddle’s Island.
In 1801, William H. Sumner, who had inherited the land now called Noddle’s Island, proposed to the government to create a turnpike that connected Salem, Massachusetts to Boston. He said that it would make East Boston easier to develop—and he was not wrong. Once the East Boston Company, a collaboration between Sumner and other business partners, was founded, they had control over the entire landmass, and they planned out the neighborhood.
Shortly after people began settling around Jeffries Point, the bridge connecting to Chelsea was built. By 1835, there were ten wharves in operation. In 1836, East Boston was annexed by Boston, and it started to become a place for immigrants to settle down. By 1940, East Boston was known as the Ellis Island of Boston.
Up to 2015, much of Suffolk county’s varsity sports teams didn’t have a stadium of their own. With the creation of the East Boston Memorial Park, however, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and baseball leagues gained a permanent place to play.
Being that Jeffries Point is right outside of Boston Logan International Airport, it is one of the most convenient places to visit in Boston if you are coming and going. Just off Airport or Maverick Station, Jeffries Point is a fun way to introduce yourself to the metropolitan area or the one place to visit for a goodbye.
One of the best pizza places in the whole city, Santarpio’s Pizza (with over 2,000 reviews on Google Maps alone) is located within Jeffries Point. If your stomach is rumbling before or after your long flight, make a stop to grab a slice or several. You sure won’t regret it. Other great places for a nibble or two are Downeast Cider House and Cunard Tavern. If you are thirsty and want some amazing beers and ciders, the Downeast Cider House is for you. But if you want something to snack on alongside a drink, Cunard Tavern is ideal.
One of the best parts of Jeffries Point would be the views of the city and all the green space. You can walk from the East Boston Memorial Park down towards the Portside at East Pier, where the view of the bay is worthy of several pictures, then head along Marginal Street towards Noddle Island and the Nantucket Lightship. If you love snapping pictures of airplanes, the view from Porzio Park is perfect.
You do not want to leave Boston without a moment or two spent in Jeffries Point. The neighborhood may be quiet, but it has gorgeous scenery, green space, and great food.
Perhaps you’re a busy Jeffries Point parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
