East Cambridge has much to offer locals and visitors, especially with places like Kendall Square and Lechmere Square. The latter has long been a hub of industry and commerce, but these days it is on the fringes of a district full of dot-com companies and business firms, making it a hub for public transportation and convenience. Lechmere Square also has shopping, dining, and even historical landmarks to seek out.
If you plan on visiting Kendall Square or the Lechmere Viaduct or even the Museum of Science, then you should consider strolling around Lechmere Square. Here is everything you need to know:
First off, Lechmere is pronounced “leech-meer.” The name comes from the Colonial-era Loyalist named Richard Lechmere, who had decided to return to England during the American Revolution. The new American government seized his lands, but at least the government decided to give the lands his name to remember him by. The shoreline near Lechmere Square is also known as Lechmere’s Point on maps drafted during the American Revolution because it was the landing point of many British troops who were headed towards Lexington and Concord.
Being part of East Cambridge, Lechmere Square is a popular meeting point for residents and visitors alike. Most of the streets are in a grid pattern and extend southwards. Lechmere Square is considered the transportation hub for East Cambridge, for it is where many trains and buses stop.
Lechmere Square is best known for CambridgeSide Galleria, a gigantic shopping mall that sits between the limits of both Cambridge and Boston. The CambridgeSide Galleria sits upon the land where the original Lechmere store sat.
Around the early 19th century, Andrew Craigie, for whom Craigie’s Bridge is named, started to develop the land around the square. Later, an establishment was constructed and called “Lechmere.” It then expanded into a regional chain that decided to close all doors in 1997.
Another historical element around Lechmere Square is the Lechmere Viaduct. The viaduct was constructed because of a need for transport between East Cambridge and Boston. Also, Craigie’s Bridge made commute by car slow. June 20, 1907, construction started on the one-mile length of elevated subway tracks that connected East Cambridge to Canal Street. At the core of the project was the 1,700 foot-long Lechmere Viaduct that spanned the Charles River.
More recently, Lechmere Square has been undergoing a revival. Many of the old warehouses that had been neglected throughout the years are being gradually converted over to condominiums and offices. Most of these developments started around 2004 and 2005, but there is still a lot of conversion underway.
Since Lechmere Square is such a convenient spot on the map to explore, there is no reason not to see what there is to offer. There are plenty of things to do in Lechmere Square today, including a visit to the stunning CambridgeSide Galleria shopping mall. For those who enjoy art, the Multicultural Arts Center is quite the experience. You can also tour the Charles River with a boat tour by the Charles Riverboat Company.
If you want to wander some green spaces, you don’t have to go far. Right outside of Lechmere Station is access to Lechmere Canal Park. You can follow a trail that leads to the Cambridge Parkway, which runs along the riverside and brings you towards Kendall Square. Go north, and you reach North Point Park and Playground, as well as Paul Revere Landing Park. Don’t forget to visit the historic Lechmere Viaduct! It is truly a sight worth seeing, especially with the scenery that surrounds it.
Be sure to visit Lechmere Square on an empty stomach. There are hundreds of restaurants throughout East Cambridge, and many of them are within walking distance of Lechmere Station. Right down the road is Royal Punjab, for those who love Indian food. You can walk down Third Street to the Kendall House of Pizza or Desfina, a highly recommended Greek restaurant. CambridgeSide Galleria also has plenty of options.
Coffee lovers: Try out Curio Coffee. It is a few blocks west of the station. The cafe serves up some of the best coffee you will ever taste, as well as plenty of wholesome goodies.
Were you looking to get to Lechmere Square quickly and with fewer transfers? You are in luck. Lechmere Square receives service from the MBTA Lechmere station as the Green Line’s northern terminus. Several bus lines also stop at Lechmere station.
