There is something elegant and serene about the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston with the brick row houses and tree-lined streets and green spaces nestled between the buildings. One of those parks is Louisburg Square, a nice niche that has been around since the 1840s. Although it is small, a visit to Louisburg Square is bound to be a refreshing little pit stop during a stroll through the Beacon Hill area of Boston.

Here is everything you need to know about Louisburg Square and Beacon Hill to make your trip special:

The People and Places of Louisburg Square

Technically, Louisburg Square is a private park that is maintained by the owners of the houses and Louisburg Square Proprietors. In other words, Boston does not own the land nor the garden within. The name Louisburg is to honor the Battle of Louisburg in 1745, in which the Massachusetts militiamen, commanded by William Pepperell, overtook the French Fortress of Louisburg in Canada.

Interestingly, the square is an oval. However, since it is a privately owned park, it is not generally accessible to the public. That said, you can still linger around the iron-wrought fence, snap pictures of the houses and sculptures, and enjoy the serenity.

Most of the houses around Louisburg Square have been divided into condominiums and apartments. There have been many famous people living around Louisburg Square, including William Dean Howells, an author and critic, and Louisa May Alcott and other members of the Alcotts. In 1852, the singer Jenny Lind got married in No. 20, which is also presently the household of former Secretary of State John Kerry.

Did you know that there is a legend involving Louisburg Square? It is said that it once was the location of Reverend William Blaxton’s spring. Blaxton, or Blackstone, was one of the first settlers in the area during the 1620s. Blaxton invited Puritans to his abode during a period when the settlement was experiencing a drought. He later sold the Puritans. Also, all of Boston then decided to move to what was later known as Rhode Island to find more excellent seclusion. However, you cannot find any water in the area. A plaque on 50 Beacon Street describes Blaxton in greater detail.

The History of Louisburg Square

The houses around Louisburg Square are unique in their architecture. Most of them feature Greek Revival elements to reflect the privilege of dwelling in such a high-end section of the city. This was what the residents during the 19th century had wanted to depict. No. 2 Louisburg Square was built in 1847 and is the youngest structure around the square. It belonged to Thomas Handasyd Perkins Jr., a philanthropist, and merchant, who was called “Short Arm Tom.”

In 2011, the townhouses throughout Louisburg Square were selling for around $11.5 million each. In 2014, Louisburg Square was named one of the most expensive residential areas in the entire country. In December 2019, the house No. 17 Louisburg Sale was listed for $20 million.

Louisburg Square Today

These days, the grassy patch of green has been ringed with an iron-wrought fence and is considered a private park. It is owned by those who live around it. At the north end of the park is the statue of Columbus, and the other end has Aristides the Just. Though you cannot enter, the neighborhood is included in many guidebooks of Boston so that you can expect magnificent scenery for a stroll and photography.

There are also plenty of places to go and things to see around Louisburg Square. Since the square is located between Pinckney Street and Mt. Vernon Street, you can walk in either direction and find something awesome. To the east is the Massachusetts State House, the Museum of African American History, and—to the northeast—is the Vilna Shul, Boston’s Center for Jewish Culture. At the Vilna Shul, you can go on a tour to learn more about Jewish history and the community.

Walk southward, and you will connect with Beacon Street, Boston Commons, and dozens of landmarks and historical sites. Be sure to visit the Boston Commons Frog Pond. In the wintertime, the pond has ice-skating. In the summertime, you can enjoy the spray pool. Nearby is also the Boston Foundation Monument, the William Hickling Prescott House, and access to the winding Esplanade along the Charles River.

If you get hungry after visiting Louisburg Square and Beacon Hill, you won’t stay hungry for long! Both Charles Street and Cambridge Street (north of Louisburg Square) have more restaurants than you can count. Some of the best places to eat around Louisburg Square include Tatte Bakery & Cafe, The Paramount, Cheers (yes, that Cheers), and Fin’s Sushi & Grill. Be sure to stop by Beacon Hill Chocolates as well to pick up some souvenir goodies. Helen’s Leather Shop is another great place to purchase gifts for your loved ones.
