Lower Allston, also known sometimes as “North Allston,” has a lot to offer. Although the region is mainly occupied by students, which becomes most evident during Allston Christmas in September, it is also a small neighborhood full of younger professionals and long-term residents. While Allston has plenty of apartment buildings, Lower Allston is quieter and far more residential.
Allston and Lower Allston alike are some of the most student-dominated zip codes throughout Massachusetts, but Lower Allston has more permanent residents. The neighborhood stretches across the Massachusetts Turnpike and consists of the streets that are above Cambridge Street. It ends at the Charles River. To the west, you find the fringes of Lower Allston along with Windom and Everett Streets. Everyone in Lower Allston shares the 02134 zip code.
Lower Allston is often a sought-after locale for renters, especially those who seek an area that is quiet and has fewer instances of crime. It is also conveniently located between Allston Village and Harvard Square.
The population of Allston as a whole as gone down slightly over the years. In 2010, the population was around 21,500, but as of 2018, it was 19,424. That is a 10 percent decrease. The median age of residents is 27. About 12.3 percent of the population is Hispanic or Latino. There is also a high presence of foreign-born residents in Allston and Lower Allston, with many of them coming from East Asia.
If you are looking for love, you should head to Lower Allston. Not only is the population evenly split between males and females, but 78 percent of the residents are also single.
Once, all of Allston was a piece of Brighton. Then in 1867, a railroad depot for the Boston and Albany Railroad was established. In 1868, the post office and station took the name “Allston” after a painter named Washington Allston, who had lived in Cambridgeport across the Charles River.
In 1874, Allston and the rest of Brighton were annexed by Boston. During this time, the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow owned several properties in the neighborhood. Later, in 1997, the depot for the railroad was replaced, and by 1888, the first trolley from Boston started to operate, running a track that started at Coolidge Corner, Brookline, Boylston Street, and Boston. From there, Allston began to grow. The community developed because of the railroad and livestock trade.
In the 1960s, the Massachusetts Turnpike was constructed through Allston and opened to commuters between 1964 and 1965.
There is plenty to see and do in Lower Allston and its surroundings. Greenery, shopping, and much more await. You can also enjoy events throughout the year in Allston, including Allston Squirt Gun Day. That said, there are numerous points of interest in Lower Allston alone.
The Artesani Playground Wading Pool and Spray Deck is an awesome spot to cool down in the summertime, especially if you have children in tow. Or you can wander around the Christian A Herter Park and Soldier’s Field Stadium. There are also trails around the Charles River and great views to behold. If you are feeling adventurous, find the bridge to cross the river. You’ll soon find yourself at Harvard’s campus.
If you are feeling hungry, the locals recommend a walk down Western Avenue. The Breakfast Club and Article 24 are both extremely popular with residents and visitors alike. The Breakfast Club is a great place to take in American diner ambiance. If you are up for something meatier, try out Spring Shabu Shabu, a Japanese restaurant.
