Just south of Boston is Roxbury, and in that neighborhood, you can find the Lower Roxbury Historic District. The rows of houses were constructed during the 1890s and were a mix of residential and commercial sites. To this day, these buildings have been preserved extremely well, making them a treasure that has survived 20th-century projects and urban development.
Even if you aren’t interested in the fascinating architecture of the Lower Roxbury Historic District, there are other things to discover. Let’s learn more about this Boston neighborhood.
Lower Roxbury is just south of Boston and near the Frederick Douglass Square Historic District. The location is home to a diverse community of people, with most of the population being Black or of African descent. Asians, Hispanics, and Latinos are also present in the area. Because of this, Roxbury and Lower Roxbury have a unique landscape that blends various ethnic and cultural influences.
As of 2016, the total population of Roxbury was 59,626. About 9,550 people dwell in Lower Roxbury. About 48 percent of Lower Roxbury residents are Black, and another 36 percent are Hispanic or Latino. The population density is rather high compared to other sections of the city, and there is a large number of people younger than 18 years old. Interestingly, the linguistics of Roxbury are quite diverse. Most people do speak English, but many of them use Spanish or a European language at home.
While you will hear Lower Roxbury often called that name in conversation, the area is documented as the neighborhood between Tremont Street to the south and Columbus Avenue to the north. The total area is about 3 acres. On the western side, you will find St. Cyprian’s Place on Walpole Street, and the eastern edge is framed by Burke Street. Most of the buildings that originally stood along Coventry Street were demolished during urban development.
In the past, all of Roxbury was a separate entity outside of Boston. The Boston Neck that split Roxbury from the city was redesigned during the 19th century, though, and that widened the land, allowing for more building opportunities. In 1868, Boston claimed Roxbury. At that time, Lower Roxbury was the land south of the Boston and Providence Railroad line. The area was dotted with marshland, and it wasn’t developed until the 19th century.
The oldest buildings that still stand today are from the 1850s, but most are from the 1890s. Another notable building is St. Cyprian’s Church, which was constructed between 1915 and 1938. The Gothic Revival architecture is astounding, especially when compared to other Classical Revival designs in the area. In 1994, the Lower Roxbury Historic District was included in the National Register of Historic Places.
