There used to be an old refrain that went “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin,” but that could not be farther from the truth these days. Located about 10 miles above Boston, Lynn has been undergoing a historic renewal of sorts that now makes it one of the most happening communities on the north side of the capital. There are a lot of fascinating things to see and do in Lynn, Massachusetts, so it is a place worth visiting at least once!

Let’s learn more about what Lynn has to offer!

The People and Places of Lynn

Lynn has seen rough patches throughout history, which can be seen in the ways the population has risen, fallen, and climbed once again. The highest population in the city was 102,320, as recorded by the 1930 Census. In 1980, the number dropped to an astounding 78,471 but then rebounded in 2016, when the population was estimated to be 92,697. There are around 33,300 households, and around 21,000 families dwelling in Lynn.

A little over half the population is White (58%), followed by Hispanic and Latino (32%), Blacks or African American (13%), and Asian (7%), with nearly 4% of the Asian population being Cambodian.

Lynn has a large population that is divided up into 3 areas with several distinct neighborhoods within each:

  • Central – Central Square and Downtown/Business District
  • West Lynn – Pine Hill, Tower Hill/Austin Square (Saugus River), McDonough Square/Barry Park, Veteran’s Village, The Commons, The Brickyard, and Walnut Street/Lynnhurst
  • East Lynn – Diamond District/Lynn Shore, Wyoma Square, The Highlands, Goldfish Pond, The Fay Estates, Ward 1/Lynnfield Street, The Meadow/Keaney Park

Spread throughout those areas are 18 elementary schools, four junior high schools, two alternative schools, and three high schools from the Lynn Public Schools district. There are also independently run religious schools and the North Shore Community College located within Lynn.

The History of Lynn

The city of Lynn, MA was named after King’s Lynn, a town in England, where Lynn’s first minister, a man named Samuel Whiting, came from. Lynn began as a fishing and farming community but then started to thrive in the industrial age, when many shoe-making factories and tanneries were built. In fact, in 1629, Lynn was the first town to have a tannery in the whole country. Lynn was incorporated as a town in 1631. That lasted until 1850 when the population grew enough for Lynn to be named a city.

Lynn is a place of many “firsts,” which is why instead of the “city of sin,” the residents have nicknamed their home “the city of firsts.” Those accomplishments include:

  • Being home to the first tannery
  • First ironworks in 1643
  • First fire engine in 1654
  • Creation of the first roast beef sandwich
  • Lydia Pinkham, a Lynn citizen, was the first woman in the country to use her own image to market and sell her product, a vegetable compound
  • In 1888, the first electric trolley departed from Lynn
  • In 1912, Lynn was the site of the first airmail delivery
  • In 1942, the first jet airplane engine was constructed in Lynn’s General Electric plant
  • Maria Mitchell, a resident of Lynn, was the first woman to be inducted into the prestigious Academy of Arts and Sciences

Many movies and TV scenes have also been shot in Lynn. For example, the movie Black Mass with Johnny Depp was filmed in Lynn. Other movies include Surrogates, Joy, The Departed, and Central Intelligence.
