Seeking somewhere to go this weekend? Why not head to Malden, MA along the Mystic River? Located only 5 miles northwest of Massachusetts capital, Boston, it is the ideal place for new experiences. In fact, in 2009, Malden was called the “Best Place to Raise Your Kids” in the state by Bloomberg Businessweek. So you know you are bound to find a lot of family-friendly fun in Malden! Let’s look more into what this pleasant city has to do and see.

The People and Places of Malden

Many famous people have come from Malden, including E. Florence Barker (1840-1897) of the National Woman’s Relief Corps; Philip Bynoe, a Grammy nominee, and Emmy Award-winning musician; Albert DeSalvo, the Boston Strangler; Lawrence Palmer, an Olympic gold medalist, and ice hockey player; and more.

According to the 2010 Census, Malden had around 59,450 people, which means the population will have risen to above 60,000 by now. In 2010, there were also around 25,200 households and 13,600 families living in the city. Furthermore, around 37% of the population in 2010 was foreign-born, and it was predicted that this number would rise. Many immigrants living in Malden come from places like Morocco, Pakistan, Haiti, India, Brazil, and China. Before the 2000s, most of the immigrant population was coming from Ireland and Italy.

To serve a high Chinese population, Malden has an Immigrant Learning Center, where bilingual classes are offered. There are also several coalitions for the Asian population. In 2017, the South Cover Community Health Center was constructed to serve the Asian American groups in Malden, as well.

Malden also has several schools for the children. There are five elementary schools and intermediate schools, one public high school, several charter schools, and a few Catholic schools in the city.

Like many New England cities, Malden has distinct regions that are organized around squares. The most noteworthy neighborhoods, where you can find old buildings and businesses and much more include Bellrock, Maplewood, and Edgeworth. However, there are other neighborhoods, such as Belmont Hill, Forestdale, Ferryway, and Faulkner.

The History of Malden

Before Malden was settled by the Puritans in 1640, the land belonged to the Pennacook tribe. Originally, the city was called “Mistick Side,” and was connected to Charlestown. The name Malden was chosen by Joseph Hills, who was the settler and landholder within the area, who named it after a place with the same name in England. On March 31, 1882, Malden was incorporated as a city.

During the American Revolution, the population was only around 1,000 people, but the citizens were very involved in the resistance against Britain. Malden was also the first town to petition to secede from Britain.

In 2004, a Malden same-sex couple were the first to marry in Massachusetts at Cambridge City Hall on May 17th at 9:15 AM.
