Farther from Boston are plenty of towns and cities with points of interest and historical significance. Quincy, Massachusetts, for instance, as several attractions and sites that continue to attract visitors from all over. Yet, there are also hidden gems, such as Marina Bay in Quincy, where a small residential population can be found alongside a boardwalk, seaside entertainment, and a large marina full of ships.
Whether you find yourself in Marina Bay for the sunset beyond the marina, the restaurants, or the nearby parks, there is something for everyone here.
Interestingly, Marina Bay may have its own zip code, but the Post Service will not accept letters addressed to Marina Bay 02171, only letters directed towards Squantum, Quincy, or North Quincy. Although Marina Bay is not considered a neighborhood within Quincy and is not listed on the Geological Survey database, it does have a unique population and reputation. For instance, in 2004, Marina Bay got nationwide attention when Willie McGinest, a New England Patriots linebacker, was interviewed at his home. Since that interview, Marina Bay has seen far more visitors.
Being that Marina Bay is a “mixed-use development,” it is home to residents who dwell in condominiums, housing complexes (townhouses, low-rise apartments, and detached, single-family houses), and assisted living, while businesses reside around commercial and entertainment areas, office buildings, the 685-slip marina, restaurants, and a boardwalk by the sea. It is estimated that around 2,000-2,500 permanent residents can be found in Marina Bay, but census data is lacking.
Though it may not look like it now with the residential complexes and restaurants and boat marinas, the area was once home to Naval Air Station Squantum and the Victory Destroyer Plant. The naval airfield closed in 1954, and the base was auctioned off by the US General Services Administration to an electric utility company, Boston Edison, in 1956. Although there were many plans for the land, Boston Edison wanted to use the 600 acres of land to build a massive electricity generation plant, as well as a nuclear power plant.
However, these plans fell through, and the electrical company eventually leased the land to a company that managed a marina during the 1960s. The marina decided to use the naval airbase hangar as a marina building instead. This agreement lasted for about 20 years before Boston Harbor Marina Inc. (later known as Marina Industries Inc.) displayed interest in using the land for a mixed-use complex. Alongside developers William and Peter O’Connell, the project gained rapid support from the city of Quincy, and construction began in 1985.
The projects lasted for several years but came to a halt during the recession in the early 1990s. The O’Connells had to declare bankruptcy. But even after foreclosure, construction continued under other groups who had affiliated themselves with the developers. Because of this, many professionals and companies started to display interest in the location, later causing the area to be called a successful example of neighborhood development, or something called “New Urbanism.”
Though the complexes and business did not succeed without controversy—such as talk of noise pollution—Marina Bay has become a feature within Quincy and a popular place for day trips and residential living, recreation, and more.
Being that Marina Bay is located between North Quincy and Squantum, it is a great place to make a brief stop or even take a leisurely day trip. With restaurants, an event hall, green space, and scenery, there are plenty of things to do here. In a single day, you can wander the Squantum Point Park or the Dickinson Waterfront. Watch the sun go down from Squantum Point—and bring a camera. The colors are bound to wow you.
Linger along the boardwalk before tucking into one of the waterside restaurants. Whatever you are craving, you are sure to find something to hit the spot. The Reelhouse Marina Bay has dockside seating, so you can watch the ships swaying. There is also Victory Point Italian Kitchen & Seafood and Siros Restaurant for authentic Italian cuisine. If you want something a bit sweeter, check out Cream & Sugar.
Marina Bay may be a small cluster of residential buildings, but it is a worthwhile trip to make, especially if you love sunset views and dining by the sea.
Perhaps you’re a busy Marina Bay parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Marina Bay don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family.
