East Boston is one of the most fascinating historical pieces of a sprawling city. With many years serving the Boston area as an Ellis Island of sorts, East Boston has a varied population. There are a plethora of ethnic stores, restaurants, and cultural influences throughout the area. One of the more pivotal locations in the neighborhood is Maverick Square, also known as Scarmella/Maverick Square.
If you plan on walking around East Boston today, then you should also head on over to Maverick Square for food, sun, and views of the city.
East Boston has always played an integral role in the history of the city, and it has many commercial districts throughout. Maverick Square is one of the more notable areas on Meridian street. Here, you can find commercial and residential buildings that were constructed in the second half of the 1800s, especially around Maverick Square and Central Square.
Presently, the area surrounding Maverick Square is considered largely commercial. There is a half-mile-long stretch of businesses, starting at Lewis Mall, through Maverick Square, and up towards Lexington Street and Central Square. For many, Maverick Square is thought to be the entry point of East Boston, since there is a relatively news commute option called the Maverick MBTA station to the north of the green space. To the south, there is a waterfront park that connects Jeffries Point to Border Street.
Though East Boston has supported immigrant populations throughout the years, one look around the area between Maverick Square and Central Square will tell you that the demographics lean heavily towards a Spanish-speaking community. In 2010, almost 50 percent of households around the Square were Hispanic, and more than 55 percent of the population spoke a language other than English at home.
Before the 19th century, East Boston was not a single island but many, and each one was used for a different purpose. However, in 1833, General William H. Sumner, the owner of Noddle’s Island, decided to form the East Boston Company and develop the islands for both residential and industrial use. Sumner also wanted to create a railroad that connected these places. As the plans came together, the East Boston Company recognized that they wouldn’t be able to attract prospective residents without places to stay and transportation, so they established a ferry service, constructed a wharf, and built a hotel in Maverick Square.
Through the early 1900s, Maverick Square became a center for banking and business. There were several town halls and churches shared between Maverick Square and Central Square, including the Lyceum Hall and the Maverick House. Social clubs started springing up, serving East Boston throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, up to when the immigrants started to arrive.
During the 20th century, Maverick Square shifted towards the industry to support the work being down at the waterfront. The surroundings have since then seen many transformations, from banks and churches to clubs and businesses and houses, and now a mixture of historical buildings, banks, and much more.
The area surrounding Maverick Square is full of hidden gems. The East Boston Greenway can be found a few streets over, leading you to the East Boston Park. Jeffries Point is just beyond that and full of beautiful homes. Further west, you can find the piers, Carlton’s Wharf, Lo Presti Park, and Decatur and Meridian Streets Park. Further south is the Lewis Mall and Lewis Mall Harbor Park. All this is connected by green walkways and quiet streets.
The square itself is framed by restaurants, such as Taco Mex, La Sultana Bakery, and D’Parma Italian Cuisine. There are few historic landmarks in the area, save for the Square itself, but it is a pleasant area and a nice place to settle down with some takeout for a picnic.
Maverick Square is conveniently connected to the rest of Boston via the MBTA Blue Line. You can also use buses or drive one of the three tunnels. With Logan International Airport close by, you can visit Maverick Square upon arrival or on the day of your departure and make your visit extra special.
Perhaps you’re a busy Maverick Square parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Maverick Square don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task. You can arrive at home knowing that your house has been cleaned by a qualified team of professionals and will shine from top to bottom.
